Lewes Road Garden

I've already pointed out that although a wonderful little park it's off Lewes Road it doesn't have that many benches (the gates are also closed quite early nowadays) and the idea was to create somewhere in the middle of the urban drabness of Lewes Road.

And it stops (for now) the Tesco juggernaut.

You can often tea and coffee at the Garden, they run quite a few workshops and it has made a difference to the area. Honestly, it's worth fighting for.

Edit - it was the entrance to the tunnel to the Kemp Town train station. The Lewes Road train station was sited behind what is now the Sainsburys at the gyratory. They pulled the Lewes Road viaduct down in the 80s (I think)

oh yeah, see that now. Sorry.

The council could do a lot with that patch as compensation maybe? I doubt it though, money talks.

Anywhere is within walking distance in the city.

But aside from The Level and Saunders Park (nein danke), no significant green space is within a mile of that site. If you've got kids or family with you - forget it, or take a car.

Saunders Park has been done up very nicely. I think that some of the money for the renovation may have come from Tesco - not 100% sure though. I often bring the kids to the park as it's better than a lot of the other Brighton parks now.

And I'm pretty fit but I would struggle to get from the community garden to Queen's Park in 20 minutes - virtually anyone who's not an Olympic athlete would. And St Anne's Well gardens is a good 45 to 50 minute walk. Sounds like there are few people who don't walk around Brighton much if they're making such ridiculous guesses.

leave what out? You seem to have nothing useful to add to this debate only snide comments and the inevitable reminder that you own property.

What is your problem? Why are you such a nasty little shit? I really don't get you. One minute you're pretending you're a spokesman for those that don't live in the trendy parts of Brighton and the next it's crap jokes about Whitehawk and rubbishing a community action in Lewes Road.

You really come across as a spiteful, envious little man.

My point was that the the road to Queens Park is not the steepest in town.

Blaker's Park is a mile away.

Wild Park is over 1.5 miles away. 30 minutes at a pace, 50 minutes with kids. We know you're abusive in front of your kids, but surely even you wouldn't make them walk for 50 minutes like that.

But seeing as you're someone who doesn't know what they're on about, you would say that.

Why do you keep on about my kids Alan. YOU should not be referring to other peoples kids and I think you know what I mean. And how do you know how fast my kids walk? That is most disconcerting you really are like the child catcher sometimes.Keeping on referring to my children gives me the creeps to be honest. Actually my youngest can't walk at all!

There's a little park at the bottom of Hartington Road.

I remember it when it was a petrol station. Lewes road has always been a bit a dive, and anything to brighten up the area is good in my book. Definitely no need for a Tesco's or bookies, as it's not needed for the community, but two points:
1) The land is owned by someone else
2) The land is owned by someone else.
I realise that is the same point twice, but I felt it was important enough to say it twice.

p.s Thanks to Red Dwarf for the joke.

This.

It's not a ridiculous guess at all. I walk everywhere in Brighton and those are routes I do at least 4 times a week. You have to be pretty unfit if it takes you the best part of an hour to walk 2.5 miles

Really? It takes me 30-35 mins from the top of Hartington Road to the dials or vice versa. From there to St Ann's well gardens would take me 25 mins I reckon. To Queens Park is a shorter hill than Hartington so ten miniutes max for me.

Yep. I'd agree with 25 mins from Dials to SAW and about 20 minutes to the Dials from the gardens.

Defining a brisk walk as 4mph, someone fit walking on the flat should do 2.5 miles in 37 minutes. add 10% for the gradient and add 5 mins for crossing roads and we get 48 minutes - exactly what I said.

That doesn't take into account avoiding people, obstacles etc - walking in urban areas adds several minutes to any journey.

I don't drive and have been walking around Brighton for 40 years. I have an excellent idea how long it takes to get anywhere.

There is another site round the corner, also formerly a petrol station, in Hollingdean Road which could do with some people livening it up and freshening it up, although it wouldn't have the same impact as the one on Lewes Road.

Why not use that as a fall back?

The average walking pace of an individual is 3-4 mph. But that's average and doesn't take into consideration weight, carriage, obstacles etc, there are going to be people who walk faster, and people who walk slower.

from to dials to saw is 5 mins! which way do you go????

Cant remeber the names of all the roads but it takes no time. I can't see how people take so long to walk everywhere, I know how long it takes me and it isn't 50 mins, its 25. It aint that bloody hard! Google has it down as ten mins but as I say they always overestimate. I prob do walk quite fast but not much faster than most I wouldn't say.

What do you mean Tesco grew astronomically in Brighton & Hove under Labour?

There's several Tesco Expresses (three in Brighton, four in Hove) but only one main store.

In my book, that is a pretty sizeable growth in a short space of time. Not forgetting to mention that this latest Tesco store was planned way before the ConDems took power.

A strange stick to beat the new administration with.
