While I agree we certainly don't need another Tesco's the council provides many, many green sites for us and maintain them extremely well, there aren't that many bums hanging around except for the level but you have Queens Park, St Annes Well and many more spaces within strolling distance. These people don't own the land and are not entitled to be on there. Also I walked past it about a month ago and if it still looks as much of a shabby pit as it did then I'd be happy to see it cleared up. I agree that a nice shop or something entirely different would be good but whatever it is it has to make a profit for the owner and that's as it should be. Unfortunately some stringy, withered old pot bound carrots grown in contaminated earth aint that much of a money spinner!

So Queens Park and St Annes Well are strolling distance from Lewes Road?
I suppose you think Sheepcote is just a stroll from Brighton Station too?

Queens PArk is for certain. Up Elm Grove turn right, takes about 10 mins. St Annes Wells takes about 25 mins walk. That is a stroll for sure.

Maybe for you, if you are super fit or riding that wondeful machine of yours.

Personally, I think double thse times for most people. Elm Grove is a bastard of a hill and St Annes is in Hove.

William Clarke Park aka the Patch between Hartington Road and Franklin Road. Trouble is that this doesn't have very many benches at all and although a lovely little park is off Lewes Road. The Garden is an attempt to brighten up a distinctly urban blandness.

(and the Patch committee is as far as I am aware in pretty much full support of the Garden).

Queens Park is up probably the steepest hill in Brighton and would only be a 10 min stroll if you were fit. Not if you have a pushchair, small children or weren't too steady on your feet or you have shopping.

St Anns Wells in 25 mins? Likewise, if you're fit. I walk to Brighton Station every day and can be there in almost exactly 15 mins but if I'm doing the same trip with my children it's more like 25 mins. St Anns Wells Gardens would be more like 40.

The garden's popularity shows that it's needed round our part of Brighton. It's not us being trendy either.

Google directions gives it at about 20 mins walk which they always overestimate, it's not a long walk. Plus you have Preston Park that is about 10-15 mins walk from there too. There are plenty of Green Spaces within walking distance of Lewes Rd.

Anywhere is within walking distance in the city.

But aside from The Level and Saunders Park (nein danke), no significant green space is within a mile of that site. If you've got kids or family with you - forget it, or take a car.

Brighton - In your face
This thread has only made me want to protect the garden more. Guerilla gardening vs Tesco? Only the ConDems would back Tescos. So long as there is self capital gain eh?
It's a great example of community sharing, which is very rare these days.

As for the bike train, brilliant. It's not for me but all time I've seen them they're just cycling slow in a long queue of traffic, the rest stupid enough not to try public or green transport.

And HB&B I can feel the fear you have with Lucas. It's great.

It wouldn't take many people an hour to get to St Annes well, straight up to th edials from Lewes Rd is about 20 mins, from the Dials its a 5 min walk. Even with kids it won't take long, good for 'em!

Wild Park? Even Blakers Park is fairly a short stroll. How about the green in the middle of the Avenue?

leave what out? You seem to have nothing useful to add to this debate only snide comments and the inevitable reminder that you own property.

What is your problem? Why are you such a nasty little shit? I really don't get you. One minute you're pretending you're a spokesman for those that don't live in the trendy parts of Brighton and the next it's crap jokes about Whitehawk and rubbishing a community action in Lewes Road.

You really come across as a spiteful, envious little man.

AS someone who lives around the area, I can tell you that there are not many green sites. The Level can become a no-go zone at times with street drinkers. St Anne's Wells and Queens Park are a bit of a trek from there by foot, especially for a lot of the old-timers around the area.

There's a little park at the bottom of Hartington Road.

I remember it when it was a petrol station. Lewes road has always been a bit a dive, and anything to brighten up the area is good in my book. Definitely no need for a Tesco's or bookies, as it's not needed for the community, but two points:
1) The land is owned by someone else
2) The land is owned by someone else.
I realise that is the same point twice, but I felt it was important enough to say it twice.

p.s Thanks to Red Dwarf for the joke.

Blaker's Park is a mile away.

Wild Park is over 1.5 miles away. 30 minutes at a pace, 50 minutes with kids. We know you're abusive in front of your kids, but surely even you wouldn't make them walk for 50 minutes like that.

But seeing as you're someone who doesn't know what they're on about, you would say that.

Friends of William Clarke Park - Home

2 minutes from that site. Used to be a train station I think

I've already pointed out that although a wonderful little park it's off Lewes Road it doesn't have that many benches (the gates are also closed quite early nowadays) and the idea was to create somewhere in the middle of the urban drabness of Lewes Road.

And it stops (for now) the Tesco juggernaut.

You can often tea and coffee at the Garden, they run quite a few workshops and it has made a difference to the area. Honestly, it's worth fighting for.

Edit - it was the entrance to the tunnel to the Kemp Town train station. The Lewes Road train station was sited behind what is now the Sainsburys at the gyratory. They pulled the Lewes Road viaduct down in the 80s (I think)
