It does make me wonder about all the people that kick up a fuss about another Tescos / Sainsburys store how many actually use one of their stores. If the local objectors where that many surely these stores would fail anyway ?

Also, it's hardly fair that these companies should have to go through a tougher planning permission than any other applicant that some have suggested.

It's also very much against CMD's vision. For better of worse, Cameron spent a good part of the period before the election talking about how communities could come together for the common good. While the Lewes Road garden isn't really what he had in mind, it's probably not that far removed from Cameron's vision of Toryism.

And why the digs at Caroline Lucas? The community garden was there months before she was elected. I'm not even sure that she is the MP for that area - the Kemp Town Labour Party office used to be virtually opposite that site (although I admit the boundary could have changed since then).

Caroline Lucas calls for Tesco boycott to save community garden (From The Argus)

Because she condones this action of occupying a property that does not belong to those occupying it.

In other words illegally. That and stealing pebbles from the beach! Well:(

Just looked at some pics, it does actually look quite nice but you can get cheap food and variety at Tesco so that gets my vote!
You can also get cheap food at the Co-op next door, the Spar opposite, the Sainsburys 1minuites walk up the road, the M&S opposite Sainsburys, the Turkish supermarket 3 doors down, aswell as the Sainsburys/Somerfield/CoOp/Alid's on London Road. The area does not need any more chain shops / supermarkets.

It's principally because many people in that area don't want it. A lot of people do like the concept of supporting their local community - including supporting their local shops.

The fact that a multi-billion pounds company like Tesco can throw money at any issue in order to over-ride the wishes of local people actually grates. So I would turn it back on your argument and say that it's hardly fair that these local communities should have to be at the mercy of the whims of such huge entities that benefit so few people.

Doesn't explain this "This is exactly what many peopled feared when we were saddleD with a Green MP."

As I said, the garden was there MONTHS before Lucas was elected so how could its establishment be because the city elected a Green MP?

I think it means that although the Grden was there before she was elected she will now fight their corner, hence it has something to do with her.

I personally couldn't give a f*** what happens to the place tbh, stays as it is or Tesco whack a shop up, never go there probably never will. Lewes Road is a shithole anyway so wether it has some wood chippings and old painted tyres on it or a shop selling cheap produce makes no odds really. Now, thats the community spirit!!

Without getting too deeply embroiled in this argument, there is a perfectly good park - the patch - about 50 yards away.

I'm not sure the council could stop Tesco really, could they, as the land was previously used for retail?

As I asked before - what law has been broken?

So far they have not given peaceable possession of the land/site back to the owners or the representatives of the owners.

Therefore breaking property and civil laws.

i don't know much about politics, but surely fighting the corner of her consituents rather than tesco is what she's supposed to be doing?

It depends on their policies within the Local Plan.

There was something in it that said that they would not allow more alcohol outlets in the North Laine, principally because they are enough already (although in law, this is easily get roundable), plus the issue of Starbucks in St James's Street being refused permission to open on account of there being enough coffee shops already (not that that stopped them either).

The point I am making is that the Council may decide that there is not a need for another supermarket.

A petrol filling station is sui generis, i.e. a planning application will be needed for any change of use. Hasn't planning already been granted, though? There's little that can be done in planning terms if so, the works that Teso have already carried out on site will have been enough to implemet the permission so there's no chance of that expiring either.

Look the fact is the owners of the site, the people who have stumped up the cash to buy it want to see a return on their investment. You cannot just rock up and claim something as your own because you have current possession of it, albeit by squatting. Not even in liberalist Brighton.

I understand that.

Just because someone owns it - and wishes to profit from by selling it to a not-required supermarket - doesn't make it right.

Money, money, money, that's all that seems to matter these days.

Tesco would have carried out little work on it. They are not the planning applicants.

Planning permission was given last August, subject to 16 conditions, most of which dealt with the residential side of the application, and it is an approval which will expire in July 2012.

There is more than one issue at play here. One is that it is understood that the gardeners were prepared to give up the land once the developers asked for it back, and it is not so much that there is a new shop space going into this site, it's the fact that Tesco wants it.

So this is more about using the garden as a holding protest to stop Tesco coming in, rather than holding on to it out of sheer spite.

Nope doesn't make it right.

But that is what proerty ownership is all about. It allows you to make descsions and not have others make decisons for you.
