Cant remeber the names of all the roads but it takes no time. I can't see how people take so long to walk everywhere, I know how long it takes me and it isn't 50 mins, its 25. It aint that bloody hard! Google has it down as ten mins but as I say they always overestimate. I prob do walk quite fast but not much faster than most I wouldn't say.

I'll agree that Dials to the top end of St Anne's Well is about 5 mins or so.

But from the Lewes Road gardens to Queens Park in 10 mins? No. That's about 6mph - up a steep hill.

You can also get cheap food at the Co-op next door, the Spar opposite, the Sainsburys 1minuites walk up the road, the M&S opposite Sainsburys, the Turkish supermarket 3 doors down, aswell as the Sainsburys/Somerfield/CoOp/Alid's on London Road. The area does not need any more chain shops / supermarkets.

Agree wholeheartedly (and with Buzzers comments).

Lived around the Lewes Road area up until the end of last year, and the last thing that area needs is a Tesco Express.

The locals will no doubt have good intentions and boycott it initially, but when Tesco start selling beer/wine at a loss to entice punters throught the door, most people's principles will go out the window.

Hope I am proved wrong.

It's not a ridiculous guess at all. I walk everywhere in Brighton and those are routes I do at least 4 times a week. You have to be pretty unfit if it takes you the best part of an hour to walk 2.5 miles
And the point of little pocket parks all over the city is that, in a civilised community, people who ARE pretty unfit have the same rights as everyone else to a nice place to sit down.

... and has nobody noticed that the whole point of Tesco Express is to bring about the closure of their competitors? They don't open these places because they believe in consumer choice. They open them because they believe in the right of Tesco to have monopoly domination of the market place.

Abort, retry, fail
I thought that last point goes without saying. I am due to be best man for a friend who has just got a job sourcing land/stores for new Tesco stores. I am going to make sure the speech is a brutal one. :nono:

The best bit about Tescos and some of the others is that when they buy the land they then put a covenant on it so that if they ever put out and sell the site no one else can ever open a food shop on it!!!

As for the bike train, brilliant. It's not for me but all time I've seen them they're just cycling slow in a long queue of traffic, the rest stupid enough not to try public or green transport.

.
People like you should really think a bit harder before trotting out the standard cliche that everybody behind a wheel of a car is either 'stupid' or 'selfish'.

And before you ask: I walk to work and will always use public transport when it's the most cost-effective solution

I agree with that. However long it takes an individual to walk a distance there should be somewhere they can grab a paper and a cuppa and have a sit down. I don't use the gardens on Lewes rd but I can imagine if you have enjoyed using it it will be a shame to see it go.

It would appear an eviction notice has now been obtained and distress will occur on Monday if necessary.

Also the 'founders Messers' Blinkhorn and Evans may be liable for the owners legal costs of around £6000.

Perhaps the council can provide an alternative site or perhaps the founders or 'subscribers' can form a consortium to buy some alternative land.

There's nothing to say that Tesco has bought the land in this instance.

Tesco's wouldn't need to buy land they would become a tenant of the landowner. As would any flats or other amenities on the site. However it is the land owners prerogative how they distribute the land or how they develop or even sell it on. And that is the crucial point here.

This is something I feel very strongly about and is very very near to me so excuse me for getting on my high horse.

I can't for the life of me understand how Tescos can get away with this. Put this into perspective. In the last few years Sainsburys and Tescos have near on 15 or so Express/Local shops in the B&H area. This on top of the larger supermarkets that they own. They seem to be able to erect them completely unfettered and it doesn't appear to be stopping.

So....I live about 1 minute away from this site.

Within a 15 minute walk I can get to:
Large Sainsburys, London Road
Large Co-op, Baker Street(?)
Large Lidl, London Road (not that I would do of course)
Large Somerfield, London Road
About 4 or 5 smaller grocers in the London Road area

and if I'm really lazy and only fancy walking for 5 mins I can also get to:

Tesco Express by Brighton Uni
Large Sainsburys, Lewes Road
M&S Garage, Lewes Road
Numerous smaller grocers in the Lewes Road/Elm Grove area
....

and this is the point that really needs stressing:

Next door to this proposed development is a Co-op
Right opposite this development is a Spar
On the other side of the road to this development is another Grocery shop and a bookies.

And Tescos want to build a Tescos Express and a bookies.

Whether you think the gardeners should be there or not, this Tesco-ification of our shops is just madness. Who, at the council approves this? Why? What justification and what have Tescos promised the council?

Something is not right.

That garden is used by many people around the area. The fact that it is self-managed, often with no apparent supervision and remains graffiti -free and hasn't been vandalised speaks volumes for how we, the local residents, appreciate somewhere just to chill out without being accosted by junkies and winos (ever just tried reading a book at the level without being pestered?)

Places like the urban garden help create a community spirit. Local shops help create a community spirit. It also brightens up the area and is quite a nice place just to chill out. We don't need another effing Tescos. We really don't.

Spot on, its exactly the same in Bristol and one of the reasons for the opposition to the new City ground is that the club say they can only proceed if Sainsburys buy the current Ashton Gate site. In an area with 2 Tesco Metro's, An Aldi, a Spar an asda and numerous local shops its utter rubbish. Good for them wanting a new ground but not built on the back of more supermarkets.

No it isn't.

We have had planning laws for the best part of a century that give the community a say in what developments are permitted and what aren't.

Besides which, TLO was talking about Tescos putting a covenent on the land, which, as I understand it, they can't do if they don't own it, which is what TLO was saying.

I said no such thing, and I know that they can't.

All that has happened is that planning permission for a building with seven residential dwellings and two retail units has been sought and approved.
