No it isn't.

We have had planning laws for the best part of a century that give the community a say in what developments are permitted and what aren't.

Obviously I meant after planning permission is obtained. Which in this case it has.

I said no such thing, and I know that they can't.

Erm, that's what I meant, when I said you were talking about covenents, I meant that's what your reply was referring to. Someone else said Tescos have a history of putting covenents on, and you said there's no evidence they have bought the land (which I assumed meant you have to own the land to place the covenent on it). Which is why your comment about them not owning the land is relevant, contrary to HBB.

We walked back from the seafront this afternoon as we got to Anston or is it Ashton House next to Telecom House in Preston Road we saw a large police presence .All the crusties there have been evicted from that site. How long for though is anyone's guess. I would estimate most of the remaining Telecom and Amex employees next door had been enjoying the free entertainment in the glorious sunshine.

Yes and no.

The owners have sat on that site for years - at least 10 - and it is an embarrassing ugly stain on the main route into (and out of) Brighton.

My better half enquired about the site around four years ago and, notwithstanding it was too small for her school's purposes, the owners weren't interested in re-developing the site. I think that they were happy to sit on something which was gathering value by doing little.

Now... I'm not sure any plans have been put in place for a redevelopment now, though if they have, because of where it is, they would probably be (unwanted) offices. A bit of a re-think of strategy and council policy is called for here.

I think offices would be the best thing to go there, "affordable housing" doesn't exist. Offices would bring people in, and whne people come in they bring money and that is waht this economy needs and it's certainly what the shitehole that Lewes Rd is needs.

So why have the "Guerilla Gardeners" got the hump then Al? Regardless of what may or may be built they are going back on their word?

As far as I am aware, it's not so much the gardeners who have got the hump - they knew this day would come - it's more to do with a fair swathe of the local community (no idea if it's the majority, but if not it's a sizeable minority) who don't want Tesco there.

I think he was talking about the site in Preston Road?

Ah, I see, I'm hearing that the site isn't occupied by the original gardeners as they have kept their word and moved on.

It's not derelict. It just looks derelict.

I work there. There are half a dozen businesses based there. About 100 people work there. And I'm posting this message from there.

The City Council does have plans to redevelop the site but has, so far, failed to find a developer who has the resources to make a go of it. The original "preferred partner" pulled out, when the housing market collapsed. The council are now looking for another one.

Meanwhile ... I'll get back to work.

If the locals don't want Tesco there and they open a store, then they should boycott it. But people will gravitate there.

A good example is Starbucks in St James Street. The local hippys protested against Starbucks moving in and urged people to boycott it. Every time I go past they seem to be doing a good trade, the hippys have moved on.

We also have a large Morrisons, a Tesco Express, and a Local Co-op!
