The dog was his favourite and aging too, went to his favourote hide out, the closet, to die.
Gene, at 95, very upset at this and the old ticker gave out.
Wife so distraught at losing both that she took pills to join them.
Case closed.

It would appear that Hackman's wife died first, from hantavirus, with Hackman then being alive for up to a week before he perished from heart disease (with severe signs of Alzheimer's):-

My mum dedicated 10+ of the best years off her life to tending my grandmother Rosie as she inexorably, slowly, drifted away.
if I hadn't heard.from my.mum for a few weeks I wouldn't have thought to get in touch to check in on her, maybe after a month or so I would.

In case you didn't - yes, he is believed to have been alive for one week after his wife died. As for the dog - who knows? Died of starvation if it was no longer being fed? Died of heartbreak? Maybe the dog also got hantavirus?

Looks like he was. But there is even a suggestion he wasn't aware of her death. Such was his dementia. Awful when folk go this way.

But just to clarify, although I replied to your post with a question, it was done so to further the conversation and discussion about this sad situation, not as a direct questioning of your knowledge about the death of Gene Hackman, his wife and his dog.

Yep, doing a bit more digging it seems the poor animal was found in her crate with the door closed (that AP article didn't actually state whether it was closed or not) - A New Report Sheds Light On What Happened To Gene Hackman's Dogs
