The cat would have staged it to look like an accident. Dogs are too stupid/loyal.

The dog was his favourite and aging too, went to his favourote hide out, the closet, to die.
Gene, at 95, very upset at this and the old ticker gave out.
Wife so distraught at losing both that she took pills to join them.
Case closed.

He didn't autograph it with his full name, he just signed it using his nickname, which is allegedly how Gene "Smeg" Hackman often used to sign his autograph.
