Macky, I am proud to be English, and I can hold my head up with dignity when I think or say it. But in reading your well-intentioned, but mis-guided 'poem', I, for one, will not be told to or lectured on HOW I should be proud to be English, and the things you take appear to take pride in leave a lot to be desired.

Rightly or wrongly, the Union Flag still carries overtones of racism. In some places abroad, it's still considered a symbol of aggressive nationalism. Although the two things ought not to be related, have you noticed the decline in English football hooliganism with the decline in Union Flag representation? Not neccesarily the most convincing argument, but not a coincidence, I feel, either.

What I'm saying is that the argument for non-racist patriotism for England and Englishness under the St George flag has, I think, already been won.

There is no need to justify now, just to celebrate it.
