Cat called Diesel.
It is a rescue cat, and found in the train sidings yard... hence the name given by the shelter, which we decided to keep.

Previously we had twin cats from the same litter. We couldn't agree on names for them, so we temporarily called them Alpha and Beta.
...
and that's what they were called for the rest of their lives.

My Nan had a dog she called Samantha. No idea why.
But during the naming process, my uncles proposed that the white dog, with black and brown splodges, should be called "Snow on the mountains with the rocks showing through".
I rather liked this approach, so persisted in calling the dog Snowy, much to my Grandmothers chagrin.

Oooh. Ambrose. Like Curtly Ambrose <light goes on>

I think classic West Indian cricketers- or, in fact, any old-school cricketers- could be a goldmine of potential names.

Thanks!

What about old Sussex cricketers?

A dog called Flora. You don't feel an idiot calling for her when she's done a runner with a simple name like that.

I once lived in a house where the dog was called Balzac - you got some very odds looks roaming round Tooting Common shouting "Balzac"

Personally I'm a big fan of giving cats / dogs fairly routine names like Simon, Robert or Susan.

(no offence to any Simons, Roberts or Susans).

If I got a dog, I think I'd call him KEITH.

Correct. I had two goldfish at uni called Paul and Ian. Lols.

My neighbours let their little boy name their cat.

It's name is Nintendo.

Similar thing happened with a friends cat. His wife suggested that their son give the sweet little kitten a sweet little name.

Haribo in spite of his name has grown into quite a bruiser.

Tremendous. All of them

Might have to shorten them to Ranji, Tiger, Monty or Frank, for the purpose of shouting out the catflap late at night. But in terms of their names on the collar/ vet's paperwork: all marvellous.

Also agree with this. Dave was an early favourite, but a couple of friends had cats called Dave, so I'm bored of that.

I thin they were named after Sussex cricketers - Tim Ambrose, John Barclay

One of my favourite Have I Got News For You moments on this subject was delivered in a suitably dead-pan fashion by guest host Jo Brand:

"The producers of Downtown Abbey have denied that Lord Grantham's faithful Labrador, Isis was killed off because of an unintended association with Islamic extremism. They do admit. however, that things aren't looking too promising for the family's parrot - Boko Haram."
