I've got nothing against people smoking oily rags but the car thing is a two-fold issue - the time the eyes are off the road fiddling with the lighter/lighting up etc and second the issue of other people being in the car.

This has been blown out of all proportion. I have seen numerous women doing their make up in the front mirror and looking in the mirror whilst driving and you are telling me someone having a fag is worse when by the way it is perfectly easy to have 2 hands on the wheel and have a fag in one hand, that only tricky thing would be lighting up.

But there are infinite potential distractions in a car, you can't ban everything. I've seen people driving along with maps on their steering wheels. I've seen women putting slap on in their rear view mirrors. I've seen people upwrapping food items. I've done it myself, fiddling with a CD case to put a disc in the stereo. What are you going to do - ban maps, food, make-up and CD's ? Why stop there. Take out car radios as well, to stop people tuning radio stations in whilst on the move. Ciggies is just one other potential distraction to driving, so why just single THAT out for a ban ?

As for other people in the car - presumably adult passenegers can speak up to ask politely for the driver not to smoke. Kids perhaps arn't in that position, but having said that, as someone else mentioned, the general protocol seems to be to have the window open a crack to suck the smoke out - I've never seen a car with a thick cloud of smoke in it.

And if there's some inconsiderate bastards in this world, well thats life innit. Why should EVERYONE have to suffer new laws because of a few selfish tosspots ?

*edit*
As mentioned by Uncle S about the makeup as well

Don't even joke about it.

I am a non smoker and hate the ban on smoking in pubs.

Well the way things are going, there won't be any pubs left for us to frequent. Well, apart from the odd sterile gastro bar - frequented by smug, self-styled 'professional' couples; discussing the 'nose' on the cheapest bottle of house red, whilst marveling at the way their 'little man' is now almost able to cut up his own customised portion of ethically sourced wild boar & lychee sausages. "I say landlord, can you tell those ghastly smokers outside to have some consideration for our environment? Apart from the well publicised & frankly catastrophic health-risks associated with smoking within 20 miles of an innocent child: we certainly don't want to be instructing our soliciter to be taking action against you - due to the shocking effects of tobacco smoke on the resale value of our young Freddy's quality clothing.."

I agree with your first point - though as you say that is a totally separate issue. At the moment, only using your mobile is against the law, but how that is more dangerous than any number of other things people do while driving (including changing music, lighting cigarettes, eating food and drink, arguing etc) is a distinction I can't quite see.

Back on the smoking ban purely 'as health risk' rather than driver distraction, of course it shouldn't be banned. But that won't stop it happening.

I gave up smoking about four years ago. Like a lot of people I knew about the health risks for years, and that was always in the back of my mind. But to be honest a big incentive was that I also wanted to stop on my own terms, and not because some petty bureaucrat told me to. Which would have been very annoying, as this will be to many. You could see all this coming.

Since the smoking ban all pubs seem to smell of a mixture of cleaning fluid, piss and BO which was previously masked by tobacco smoke.

Can't remember where this was, but there was a report on the news a few months back which had picked up on the abnormally high number of cases of asthma amongst pupils at a particular school. The school was situated next to a very busy dual carriageway which most of the pupils would walk along to get to and from the school - the levels of carbon monoxide around that area was massively above normal levels.

But of course, I'm sure the majority of these asthma cases were probably caused by someone smoking in a park.

Are you for real? You don't think the shit that come out of cars is worse if not equall to fag smoke?

The shit that comes out of cars is very dangerous and I don't think I said that it wasn't. And there are many heath problems that are caused by traffic fumes. However we aren't talking about sitting in a confined area breathing in traffic fumes are we ? (Inserts smilie to illustrates point)
If you really do believe that walking down a busy street is as detrimental to a child's as sitting in a car with a smoker then I'm afraid your lack of common sense kind of puts an end to this conversation.

This'll be a real Marmite jobbie.

I'm not a smoker, but personally I think people should be able to make their own decisions in their own car. The government seems to insist on poking its nose into every aspect of our lifestyles, telling us what we can and can't do, what we should and shouldn't do. We're already f***ed six ways from Sunday by this government one way or the other, so just piss off and let us live our lives how WE see fit ffs.

Totally agree.I am a non smoker, but creeping legislation like this can very quickly take away personal liberties....thin end of the wedge.Cars then who knows homes next?:nono:

In the US having a fag in your car is an offence, it's called Public Indecency.

I am an ex smoker (usally the most vocal) but unlike some I don't care where you smoke as long as it's not near me. This whole nanny state situation is getting ridiculous, what's next ? No music in your car as you might get distracted ? Then it'll be no people in your car as you might get distracted.

Yes. It is a drug with no proven benefits that has significant downsides. I don't see why they don't ban it altogether

edit: and yes, I am a non-smoker, although I have partaken from time to time.

Nanny state advocate.

Yes.

It is distracting and more often than not, people just flick cigarette butts out of the window.

Stop and have a cigarette if you desperately need one. That is what I do.
