I don't really see what the motivation is behind this.

It cannot be "health risks" as doing anything is a health risk. So it must be related to the old smokers are draining NHS resources argument. So what happens when there are no smokers left in the UK - who are they going to pick on then? All seems rather pathetic to me.

Astounded at the number of you voting to curtail people's rights in their own car, thank f*** I only spend half the year in this nanny state country and will be gone for good when I retire.

Don't give a cr@p if people want to smoke in their cars and gradually kill themselves and their stupid kids. What I do object to is them chucking their still lit fag butts out the window, with the potential for it to set light to something etc.:wanker:

Children in a car is far more distracting.
Absolutely. Arguing, hitting each other, throwing toys around (which could roll under your pedals and cause an accident); all FAR more dangerous and distracting than someone having the odd fag. However I understand that the safety and wellbeing of children is paramount and so what the government should do is ban both smoking AND children from cars.

Being a holier than thou reformed smoker who now suffers with COPD as a result of excessive smoking in my younger days, packed up 15 years ago, I think that smoking should be banned anywhere that the general public have access to ie in the streets at bus stops outside of shops, pubs, offices etc and in cars if there are other people in the car. If I smoked and had a car I would tell people that they either allowed me to smoke or didnt get in my car. In California if somebody objects you to have to put your fag out in your own house which I think is taking it too far.

Yes. It is a drug with no proven benefits that has significant downsides. I don't see why they don't ban it altogether

edit: and yes, I am a non-smoker, although I have partaken from time to time.

There is actually quite a list of proven medical benefits to smoking (for certain condidtions).
But that's hardly the issue here.
Nobody is going to stop me smoking in a statioary car.

The public don't have access to my car, except when I park it in Liverpool!

I don't know, I think it is.

I don't agree with the creeping legislation on tobacco. In my view, it is either a serious harm to public health, in which case it should be banned, or there are justifiable reasons for allowing it, and it should be down to individual choice.

I think the saddest thing about this country is that 43% of people actually think this should be made law. As Icy said god help us all. A nation of health freaks and people who want all risk to be taken out of life and as such are usually notoriously boring. As I often said " I tend to find the most interesting people in life, smoke, drink, gamble, fornicate and have many vices ".

Money again though isn't it.

Yes, of course it should be a banned substance - if we want a healthy society.

Bu they never will because of the revenue.

Hypochrites the lot of em.

forget the poor little kiddies, if it's dangerous to use your phone then it's dangerous to smoke.

BOLLOCKS. Complete and utter bollocks.

What do you do if you want to change gear, tune to another radio station, blow your nose, pick your nose, scratch yer 'nads, wind down the window, wind up the window, change a CD or similar?

None of the above require a lot of attention and neither does smoking a ciggy.

Chatting, laughing or arguing with a person on a mobile whilst driving requires far more attention and texting even more so.

Reading maps, keeping the peace with children and ROLLING a ciggy are distracting enough for a (sensible) policeman to charge you with driving with undue care and attention.
This law exists, if a copper with some common sense and the ability to apply it did a few offenders in this way the law may not have to be changed.

Banning smoking when children in the car is fair enough, why should I get done for smoking on my way to and from work?

Look, the experts and government advisors all know whats good for you. None of us are capable of making informed decisions or leading our own lives - we need constant help, guidance, advice and most importantly LAWS from those in authority in order for us all to live long and prosper.

Its for your OWN GOOD.

no, unless they ban smoking in the home and in effect all smoking, it is a pointless and barely enforcable ban that will be only criminialise people while being widely ignored.

ban it or f*** off, stop this mincing about the issue.

Its for your OWN GOOD.

A few impromptu thoughts..

1. That's what Sir used to say before....:nono:

2. This isn't a party political thing is it?

3. When the plumber installed the boiler in MY HOUSE I found myself ASKING HIM if it was ok if I smoked, what the flipping flip is going on?

4. Will I have to check to see if children are looking out of their window so that I can hide the fact that I'm sneaking a ciggy before I walk into the pub?

5. BOLLOCKS.

The Government propose to make all smoking in the privacy of you car illegal and a criminal offense. This is on the basis of having a kid in the car but a blanket ban will apply. As a smoker or non smoker is this the right way to go ?.(Quote from US at the start of the thread)

This off of BBC news website
"Smoking should be banned in all cars as well as in public places where young people congregate, doctors are urging.
The Royal College of Physicians wants England's imminent review of anti-smoking laws to consider such measures to protect the young".

So it would appear to be a suggestion by someone other than the government. I don't think anyone from the government has advocated this so I would imagine this is not another example of Browns nanny state or the Orwellian labour party wanting to rule our lives or anything of the sort. So calm down people and save your ire for something real.

Then The Royal College of Physicians wants to wind its bloody neck in.
They're all in cahoots with each other anyway. You've only got to see the scientific "evidence" presented from the Green lobbyists which gets churned out, and then within a few years becomes Government policy on something or other, so we all have to wear sandals knitted from organic yoghurt, or live in houses made from hessian weave and drive cars fuelled by Bill Oddies piss.

If this government wants an agenda to beat us over the heads with, then they'll rattle up some made-up stats quoted from an important-sounding institution to scare us all shitless and prove to us all that "CHRIST LOOK AT THIS, SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT IT"
