As already mentioned the government can't afford to lose the tax and look what alcohol prohibition did for America.

alcohol and smoking are two very different things. the one thing sten has right is that prohibition will eventually kill smoking as a habit (along with education). his simplistic just ban it does not bear close scrutiny though thats all.

alcohol is far too ingrained (no pun intended) culturally to be eradicated even when the health issues associated with it are widely known.

apples and oranges as the crap corporate phrase goes, when it comes to prohibition.

This'll be a real Marmite jobbie.

I'm not a smoker, but personally I think people should be able to make their own decisions in their own car. The government seems to insist on poking its nose into every aspect of our lifestyles, telling us what we can and can't do, what we should and shouldn't do. We're already f***ed six ways from Sunday by this government one way or the other, so just piss off and let us live our lives how WE see fit ffs.

Well said Easy. These friggin' Orwellian types are really pissing me off. Enough already!

Well it just boils down to if you are driving without due care and attention IMO

Should you be allowed to change the radio channel?

Dont think you should ban people from smoking in their own car its getting silly now

What about looking in the rear mirror? It means your not looking straight on. Let just banned movement and put everyone in cotton buds. Then no one will ever be hurt.

On second thoughts. Lets ban life as this is the only cure for death.

Okay, yes, sorry, I should have pointed out that I know why they don't ban smoking. They need the revenue (now more than ever) and there are obvious difficulties associated with banning a product that is legal in the rest of the world. However it is patently obvious from the way they go about the creeping legislation, and continued gradual taxation, that they are not serious about getting rid of it, and that pisses me off.

I don't believe the stats I think they are lying. Do people want to live in a Police state as this is pretty much what this country is fast becoming.

I find myself somewhat sceptical of the stats as well.

"Drawing on a series of studies, the report suggests that in the UK, tens of thousands of youngsters are falling ill as a result of exposure to cigarette smoke. "

I mean come on. The amount of smoking in this country has dramatically reduced over the past few decades compared with the 50's, 60's and 70's. I refuse to believe that kids are suddenly getting all these dramatic illnesses through passive smoking. And what, from someone lighting up IN A PARK ? Its bollocks.

Just another stick for the nanny state to hit us with. Another little liberty taken away because "they know best". Honestly, outside of North Korea and China, this must be the single most GOVERNED nation in the world.

People who smoke in their cars whilst there are children in the car with them are thoughtless scum.

Just my opinion like.

People who walk their children down the street allowing their kids to breath in all the car fumes are thoughtless scum.

Just my opinion like.

They shouldn't be able to enforce any bans on something that is not illegal and they rake in money from the sales.

Either ban it altogether, make it illegal and stop coining it in or leave people to smoke where they want.

I couldn't give a toss if someone is smoking in their own car. Doesn't affect me in the slightest.
'Ard lads 'performing' at football matches though...bit different.

What you getting at ? Do you think that walking down the street is as detrimental to a child's health as sitting in a car with windows shut and someone smoking ?

Or are you making a point about the 'nanny state' 'political correctness gone mad' 'health and safety madness' society that we live in ?

Yes.

Im also very sure that most people who smoke in thier cars, will have the window open. Very little smoke ever stays in the car.

I've got nothing against people smoking oily rags but the car thing is a two-fold issue - the time the eyes are off the road fiddling with the lighter/lighting up etc and second the issue of other people being in the car.

Smokers now smoke more in their cars and more at home because the health nazi's banned them from being able to smoke when socialising in bars and pubs and refused to negotiate a workable solution for all parties such as smoking rooms and highly ventilated seperated areas but NO that wasn't good enough. They had to continue their petty and vindictive tirade against smokers. Well this is the result, the health nazi's are to account for now for the extra passive smoking kids have to endure at home and in cars as their parents aren't allowed to smoke anywhere else.
