It does feel like for once in bloody blue moon, Derby have got a good deal for one of our academy products, hoorah! Assuming he moves to Brighton, I hope he does fantastically well for you and that I'm proven entirely wrong in feeling that it's an odd signing.

It does beg the question would people prefer a cheaper quick fix CB signing like this which sounds like it could be done this week, OR wait until the summer and go all out for perhaps a higher profile 'choice A' CB signing?

Personally I'd prefer to wait rather than get a quick fix (Matt Clarke type stop gap) and really go for a Boscagli or someone else in the summer when we have more time.

If you could choose what would you prefer?

We’ve chased this guy across multiple windows, meaning our data must suggest that there’s a lot of potential upside.

This isn’t a January panic buy, it’s a player where the club believe further development and progression is likely.

To paraphrase, you know our methods, apply them.

What if Ashworth or people behind the scenes who have left were the ones really leading our transfer hot streak?
Dahoud, Fati, an injured Milner, this summers rag tag bunch.
Worrying about Ali J etc as we had the data then too.

There were enough great value pre-Ashworth signings - Gross, Bissouma, Mac Allister, Burn etc. - to suggest that it wasn't him. He's not done brilliantly since leaving either.

Dahoud and Fati were driven by RDZ, weren't they?

I’m not saying him specifically.
Re Dahoud and Fati. If that is true it at the very least suggests inconsistent thinking behind the scenes.

I think we still have a long enough history of spotting talent to be reassured.

It's also a bit early to be judging this season's recruits. The only 2 that haven't been out injured for months are Georginio and Minteh, and they've both shown loads of potential, if not great time keeping.

Fair enough, but he is known by the Derby fans as having the speed of a snail and the turning circle of an oil tanker.

Maybe he's just bluffing and he's the next Virgil van Dijk?

Ajax fans said Veltman was shit. Leeds fans said Georginio was shit. Wigan fans said Burn was shit

It's a low risk gamble, I don't mind it at all, especially considering we've clearly been after him for a while. His stats suggest he has been consistently excellent in a pretty poor side.

Here is his data, comparison is with players from 14 competitions deemed just below the 'big 5', ie Championship, Argentinian Primera, Brazilian Serie A, Portuguese Premier, Belgian Pro, MLS and second tiers of Italy, Spain, Germany, France etc:

He's also ranked eighth out of every player in the Championship this season for average rating according to Whoscored. If we were signing a player with these kind of stats from the Brazilian or Argentinian league, everyone would be creaming themselves.

Well, according to FC25 he’s faster than JPvH, who I don’t remember being embarrassed for pace recently. (I don’t know how reliable that data is tbf, but it suggests that rumours of his slothliness may have been greatly exaggerated)

It seems that a lot on here wouldn’t have signed Dunk when he was young and in the Championship. Good players can look very different in a higher league with better players around them.

FWIW i always thought this was a Rosenior recommendation to BHA which we now have data to back up

Saw him few times when Rosenior had his couple of months as manager - basically a young Dunk combined with never say die attitude of Duffy

When given a chance to settle into our squad and player for a possession based team would expect him to excel

Trouble is for last couple of years he has been playing Derby hoof ball under Warne - so won't seem like a natural fit

Murray recommended Pedro to us after a week at Watford - ex players that know the BHA way will generally get more right than wrong

Warren scouted Walton years ago and eventually he is a PL keeper at Ipswich

I agree to some extent but if they see his worth with all his upside/potential why not just cut out all the crap and make an offer that'll get accepted. We don't tend to hold back with teenagers from South America...

Negotiations take time for loads of reasons.

I’ve no visibility of the reasons for this one taking time, but if I had to guess, I’d guess that Derby want to make sure they’ve got a replacement CB before they sanction the move.

I also don’t think we necessarily want to follow the Todd Boehly method of negotiation, and just keep adding millions to the offer price.
