How did it go over my head ? You're trying to use a totally unconnected event that happened in the 13th century to debunk someones argument about the empire and its legacy as far as voting rights are concerned , nibble , you're just not clever enough to do this sort of thing, leave it to someone with intelligence like Simster .

Nice try Bushy. It was a very stupid line to put on here by Simmo. If the pairs of you didn't get the reference or the point I suggest you suck it up and move on. I hardly think someone as racist and moronic as your good self should be commenting on the intelligence of others now, do you?

Are you really that thick to assume we didnt "get" the reference ? We did , and decided , that like a lot of what you put on here, it was rubbish .

I genuinely don't believe you got my point, no. Frankly if you decide something is rubbish it only serves to reinforce my statement. And really Bushy, I wouldn't get into a head to head about intelligence with anyone on here if I were you. You're a very angry man aren't you.

Just for you I have edited post 88. I think it was pretty clear what I meant, seeing as all I do is refer to the empire in the rest of the post.

On another point Cameroon was never in the British empire, yet is part of the Commonwealth. Why are people from Cameroon whom live in Britain after a certain length of time entitled to vote in a UK election?

All you can do is repeat the "angry man" mantra , you've yet to convincingly deconstruct and show any of my arguments as flawed , you're an empty vessel nibble , and one who is constantly being exposed as so , by your weak ineffective arguments.

Neither was mozambique.

One of The Commonwealth's three main objectives was to promote representative democracy. Seeing as Britain essentially founded the Commonwealth it's be a bit rich if we didn't let our residents vote. Maybe some other commonwealth members don't allow this but we do and good on us.

Haha! Noted. All of your arguments are flawed. The gaping flaws in them are routinely being up-ended by myself and many others. They are flawed essentially because you are a narrow minded racist who will not listen to reason.

And how do you know this Bushy? Your problem is you are a racist individual who believes these people to be inferior to you and it eats you up and has turned you into a bitter, bitter man that people you believe are inferior to you have the same rights as you.

Also for the wrongs of the British empire that some people point out, there were quite a few rights in my opinion. Such as a "British" rule of law (judge/jury independant of politicians), democracy (not taken up by all, I agree), building of infrastructure roads/rail/sewerage, education/schools/universities, medicine/innoculations against disease, a common language to name but a few things that I can think of.

Indeed.

as it stands, in this country we can have an illiterate goatherder from uganda turn up and vote on the government of this country.

Okay let's address some of your points. You are assuming these British residents would be Illiterate Goatherders, a more racist statement I've yet to see from you yet.

I just got back from Uganda funnily enough, and I can inform you both that 'illiterate goat herder' is an accurate description for about 99% of the population there. Fantastic country though.

Hope this helps.

The commonwealth was set up to try to maintain the ties between countries of the old empire, why on earth are rwanda and mozambique members ? You're revealing your lack of intelligent perception post by post aren't you ?

Yes, that was one of it's aims. Another of it's aims was to be inclusive. Thankfully not many people think like you.

Well thats a coach and horses driven through my argument then ( couldnt resist using one of my old lines)

Hmm. Well yes, both those countries proved to be controversial memberships but under the guidelines of the New Commonwealth they were deemed an exceptional case. I can only assume they share enough common values to qualify. Things change I suppose. I mean, it used to be called The British Commonwealth but quite rightly this was changed .

Anyway. Back on topic. How does Alex Salmond propose to define which residents north of the border are and are not Scottish for the purpose of this vote? Seeing as Scotland isn't a country as yet, I don't see any passports defining Scottish citizenship.

Would it require being born there? Lots of people are born in different countries to that which they are a national of, for all sorts of reasons. Having Scottish ancestry? In which case how do you define how Scottish the ancestors are? Residency for a period of time? That would include LOADS of English (and Irish, and presumably Poles, Lithuanians, Latvians, French, Americans and so on). Having a McName? Owning a kilt? Being able to play the bagpipes or stomach a deep fried Mars Bar and a bottle of Buckie without vomiting?

And what about proud, haggis-munching, shortbread-smuggling true Scots like Craig Mackail-Smith and Jordan Rhodes, who reside abroad but for a cruel twist of fate in the tartan timewarp? Why should they not get a vote on the future of the nation they are so fervently attached to (or even poor old ignored Gordon Greer)?

oh dear Nibble, what now ?

I really shouldn't bother but I think it tells more about Commander that that was his impression of them than it does about them. I would have to meet 100% of the Ugandan population (I'm assuming Commander met 100% of them to be able to make this statement) and I would have to visit the country myself to draw my own judgement. However, I seriously doubt that the opinion you have of them is especially rounded as you live in one part of the UK, as we all do. Although Commander has at least been there so he is immediately more qualified than either you or I to comment.
