You write things I don't even say where does 'get over it' come into it, where do I say that?

In my post (88) I point out the positives of the British Empire which I notice no-one has really disputed. I agree that there were negatives, but there were also many positives which some conveniently forget.

You also seem to ignore the whole point of the post (88) in that the curtain on the Empire came down 60+ years ago. Yet how can this be relevant to whom is eligible to vote in UK elections now?

In respect of your final sentence it has already been pointed out to you earlier in this thread (post 58) your contradictions about the English being disliked the world over. It is just not correct (it is a theme that runs through a few of your threads). I have just been in the USA and I can assure you they do not hate us. In the course of my job I have employed a lot of people whose origins are from what is now the Commonwealth (Nigeria/India/Pakistan and others) and when I speak to them on the whole there are far more positives than negatives in respect of England itself and the English people. Tolerance and fairness of the English being a recurring answer when I ask such a question.

Some people dislike the English, in my opinion, more do not. You (and anyone whom claims this) are steroetyping against the English yourself. Maybe some, but not all Englishmen are arrogant, but in my experiences so are some, but not all Americans/French/German/South African/Australian/every other nationality in the world, that is the way it is.

This explains my contradiction. Most people take people as they find them (IMHO), but there are some who generalise and stereotype based on all kind s of different factors. I was told recently that English people were boring based on the fact the two women I was speaking to had married boring English people, hardly a wide or unbiased sample there. I would suggest that most people who hate the English hate the stereotype (of which the arrogance about our place in the world demonstrated on this thread is a big part. I am glad that most people you meet like the English and I share that experience but there are still people all over the world that hate us and hold wierd and wonderful stereotypes about us (we are all cross dressers was a good one I heard the other day).

As for your empire ideas in post 88, I did address them in another post.

The Empire may have disbanded many years ago but the countries involved in the empire are still dealing with it's effects (good and bad). You only need look at the aboriginals here in Australia who either live on reserves or struggle to assimilate with our western way of life to see that. The knock on effect of the empire is also evident in the many foreigners who are in the UK via reciprocal agreements with their countries and who are allwoed to vote, which seems to upset Bushy and your good self.

mental isnt it. given the choice of most places in the world were british people forced to flee the country, they would be picking the english speaking countries slagged off during this debate. well maybe not HT but he has connections elsewhere.

its pure snobbery and mental considering the people who say stuff like that are often fairly well educated, in theory. we constantly look to america as its a global cultural force and far more so for us as its a former colony and we can easily understand what they are saying. there are plenty, plenty of far nastier countries full of really vile people but its just easier to pick america for all sorts of mixed up reasons.

I loved most Americans I have met, especially while there. Can stand their politicians, foreign policy or multinationals!

indeed sometimes i struggle with ex pat brits especially the constant sniping at the UK while sitting in a pub called the red lion watching the football.

but that said i dont find americans offensive at all, its generally british snobbery and jealousy as much as anything. the french however, different ball game.

Not sure if this is aimed at me but because I have an opinion that may be critical of Britain I am no longer allowed to air it because I no longer live there?

I spend a lot of time defeding england and the english because i think it and we are fantasitc in many many ways. It just so happens that i disagree with some people and enjoy a bit of a discussion/binfest.

I would love to hear more about the sitting in the pub watching football thing. You make it sound as if england is the only nation that does that!

indeed bollocks to the oil and the economics we need these things sorted out first.

to be honest its not that far fetched. formerly the worlds leading power and still one of the worlds leading economies, allowing a constituent part a vote on whether it should go its own way, in this day and age, is utterly mental. to be honest we English dont help themselves in this. Its not a line thats easy to take but like in any break up you can moan about what arseholes they are until you are blue in the face but you also need to take a look at yourself. We English spent a long time ignoring the Union or at least paying the other constituent nations scant regard, and then we get all upset when nationalist sentiments come out. we never learnt our lessons with the paddies. we have to accept our part in this too. Not any easy thing to say and wont win me any friends but its true. A bit.

Still stuff them veiny nosed ginger transvestites.

To be fair I have heard stories of kind of ex pat villages over here where the local shop sells every English delicacy that you can imagine and the locals spend their time complaining about 'back home' and the local Aussies in equal measure.

Can't say I agree with over spill of Britain theory, there are far too many bloody foreigners for that. An overspill of Europe would be more accurate as the Italians especially and every other European county have huge cultural influence. But hey that's why I like it, lots of cultures living together relativity harmoniously. I find it interesting that it seems to be the people who only see themselves as Australian are the ones who cause most of the tension. Most people who understand and acknowledge their backgrounds seem to run along pretty well with everybody else. I am not sure what this means, it is just an observation.
