By "traditional stopping places" do you mean the land belonging to other people that they "traditionally" leave full of scrap metal, rubbish and human excreta ? Your last statement reveals an unbelievable level of rose tintedness, if i'm wrong , then, hey, my bad.

Common land.

A serious question: Why are you so supportive of these people?

As for respect, that is earned and I haven't seen anything about them that deserves my respect.

Everyone deserves a defence, even murderers. Certainly their contribution to culture deserves respect. I'm sure you're all happy to go and listen to some manouche, or flamenco in some middle class restaurant, or hang Alfred Munnings paintings depicting some romantic gypsy encampment. A person deserves respect, and not an immediate dismissal. What you're saying is that everyone of them doesn't deserve your respect because they haven't earned it. So I don't deserve your respect, because I haven't done something amazing for you? Get real.

What firm laws do I propose ? Making trespass a criminal offence, tightening the law so that land has to be vacated immediately and THEN the appeals process can begin for a start, and are you really , honestly trying to compare having one crusty in a van , occasinally parking in your street , to having an abomination like Dale Farm on your doorstep ?
n

All this, in effect, is currently in place. The only real difference with what you propose is that it will be done quicker and maybe with some imprisonment due to the civil to criminal change. Genius Bushy, really clever idea that. How long did it take you to come up with this?

No, you proposed a hypothetical and slightly linked question months ago, and now I have a real and genuine answer. This is all.
these laws aren't "in effect already in place", and you avoided my inference that had 80 odd families of travellers made a permanent camp on hove lawns , your attitude might just differ slightly.

And what is this about? Some sort of class angle? Remember, I'm the the white working class you love so much Bushy
Nothing to do with clss at all it was a refernce to where you live, I just happened to mention it was a townhouse, and it's the WHITE working class that I defend, due to them being screwed by successive governments, both tory and labour.

Your super new laws propose upgrading and speeding up current legislation.

And you ignored my response that I would not be happy with people pitching up on Hove lawns. Obviously this is not desirable. This would not change my current thinking on the issue though.

Why mention where I live and what I live in? What does this have to do with anything?

I hope people can see the futility of this eviction exercise. Everyone mentions taxes, or lack of them, when it comes to the traveller community. The estimated total cost of this exercise will top £15 million once it's complete. That's £15 million of tax payers money to simply move the problem on and in effect postpone the who sorry episode for a few more years and probably with a different council. This is not to mention the indirect costs of breaking up communities, messing with children's education etc.

Sadly, and yet again, we go short term and do not look for the smart solution. .....at a huge financial cost to us all.

So where does the problem lie?

Uneven logic with respect. The cost of enforcing the law frequently exceeds the cost to society if nothing was done but that doesn't mean we should do nothing. You wouldn't let elderly paedophiles roam the street just because it would take a few bob to track them down and lock them up. The rights and wrongs of this case are being discussed elsewhere but your logic is just wrong in principle.

Do you run around wearing a cape and a pair of pants outside of your tights when you're doing this? Have you got a big letter B on your chest?

Really? I'll happily discuss the matter when you show me some evidence. It's the same as me saying: 'what about all the rubbish some Albion fans discard on the way to and from a match?'

I can only assume that you have never lived anywhere near a travellers camp, those of us who have (I have twice in the last ten years) would agree with Bushy. It's time for people to stop being so 'politically correct' and try accepting facts. There are numerous examples of anti socila behaviour of 'Travellers' and frankly trying to compare the litter left (allegedly) by Albion fans to that of travellers is more than slightly ridiculous.

However this is rather straying from the point, the issue is that they are camped on land that is not meant for habitation. The land would have been considerably cheaper to purchase because of this. If the original purchaser had bought land that way set aside for deveopment it would have been considerably more expensive.
