[Albion] Our youth players coming through (are we Ajax in disguise)

For those interested, a very brief history of the Lancing training facility. Initial phase: Cost: approx £30m for building and land acquisition. Planning permission: Oct 2012 Opened: 2014 American Express sponsorship announced: June 2014 Category 1 status awarded: July 2014 Expansion: Cost...

[Football] For sale, Crystal Palace FC, asking price £210m, worth £700m within 5 years...a steal?

The current valuation seems a bit excessive to my unqualified mind, but kind of what you might expect. But £525m in year 3 and £700m in year 5! WTAF!! What on earth are they planning? I get that investing in the stadium will increase revenue, but I'd have though not even competing in the CL in...

[Albion] F365 Article: Why the statistics offer hope for Graham Potter’s Brighton...

Can't really disagree with any of that article. Our underlying stats are good; better than they ever were in this league under Hughton. I'd rather be where we are at this stage in the season with the stats indicating we are a mid-table side than higher up the table with the stats indicating we...

[Football] Newcastle 0.05 xG v Leicester

True, but in so few games the most likely explanation for the large discrepancy is misfortune, not ability. It's true we've ended up a couple of goals short of our expected season total over the last two seasons (91% and 94%) and you might reasonably expect this in a below average side. I...

[Football] Newcastle 0.05 xG v Leicester

Yeah, and also 2 of our best 5 in the PL have already happened this season. More extreme expected goal differences either way could be a feature of this season.

[Football] Newcastle 0.05 xG v Leicester

Yes, at least using this particular site's xGs. I'd guess there are lots of places doing their own particular xG analysis and they'd vary slightly. Looking at the season so far, if you disregard "big 6" matches it's reasonably encouraging IMO. We've out-performed the opposition in every other...

[Football] Newcastle 0.05 xG v Leicester

For those interested these are our match by match expected goals/expected goals against since promotion (from understat.com). Positive expected goal difference and actual wins in green. It shows how wretched we were in last season's run-in.

[Albion] Man City down to the bear bones

When the season is over I wonder if people will be looking back and pinpointing Laporte's self inflicted injury as the moment Adam Webster effectively handed the title to Liverpool.

[Football] Experimental 3-6-1: Scatter Graphics PL so far

I like this graph from https://twitter.com/S2Stats/status/1173925493629956097. Points to a comfortable season assuming our shortfall in goals vs expected goals is down to random variation rather than having a team who are bad at finishing. Going by this, Arsenal could be in for a shocking...

[Albion] Any 1901 members thinking of taking up the "The Dugout" offer?

I have found the programme notes from PBs column from the Southampton match. "Having sold out the very limited number of seats (all with food inclusive packages) in each of the two new lounges (The Dugout and Directors' Guest Lounge) within just a couple of days, we will - in addition to looking...

    [Football] England v Kosovo 7.45 tonight @ St Mary's (capacity 32,505)

He certainly was, but don't expect VAR to pick this up in the premier league. It's not being used to check keepers are on their lines for penalties, so it's up to the ref and assistants to spot.

[Film] The 100 best films of the 21st century - The Guardian

The best thing about that is it's all one one page. Hallelujah. No having to click through 10 pages, or worse one page per movie. I really don't want to be the pedantic nob who points out the 21st century started on 1st Jan 2001, but I cannot help myself.

    [News] Cyclist Scumbag

Depressing thread. The legal system is flawed and treats driving as a precious right only to be temporarily taken away in extreme circumstances. https://twitter.com/ormondroyd/status/1172101738519760896

Or another keen cyclist. That would lead to a lot of cognitive dissonance on here.

    [Albion] Cashless Amex en route...

They did mention them. "A cashless stadium also makes things simpler and more secure for us, will reduce costs for Sodexo and for us, and it will ultimately help us keep prices down."

    [Albion] Cashless Amex en route...

Yes. Hopefully having just one form of payment would make a system like this very slick indeed. I'd imagine too that one of the factors determining when to "randomly" ask for a PIN, which is one thing that would slow things down, is whether or not you have purchased from that particular vendor...

    [Albion] Cashless Amex en route...

I'd heard that too, but I am struggling to recall a single instance of being asked for my PIN when using contactless so I suspect it's a bit more complicated than that. Maybe there's an algorithm in the background which takes many things into account that determines how likely you are to be asked.

    [Albion] Cashless Amex en route...

I expect any queuing time saving from speedier service will quickly be negated by more people deciding to purchase refreshments who don't bother at the moment. A bit like widening a motorway.
