The answer Weigh 123 vs 456. If they balance, your heavy ball is 7 or 8 so require a single weigh off. If 123 is heavier that 456 your heavier ball is in 123. Weigh 1 vs 2 to discover the heaviest. If they balance, 3 is your answer.

No. Each time you replace a ball it counts as a weigh, so could require up to 7 tests. It is possible to do it in 2 though.

Here's another to mull over. You have a set of balancing scales and 8 balls. 1 of the balls is heavier than the other 7. What is in MINIMUM number of weighs required to guarantee you know which the heaviest ball is.

Yes, although that depends on your email client. For instance, if you use outlook you can use the 'View... Options..., Do not Deliver Until' setting, although that just sits in your outbox and requires your PC to be connected to the t'internet until such a time is reached.
