3 is the obvious answer...

Assume balls numbered 1 to 8 and, say, 6 is the heaviest.

weigh 1, 2, 3 and 4 against 5, 6, 7, 8. Discard 1-4

Weigh 5 and 6 against 7 and 8. Discard 7 and 8.

Weigh 5 against 6 and discover 6 is the heaviest.

But as 3 is the obvious answer I assume there is a cunning answer of 2.

I'm ashamed to say I Googled it. 2 is the answer. Cunning indeed is the method.

The answer

Weigh 123 vs 456. If they balance, your heavy ball is 7 or 8 so require a single weigh off.

If 123 is heavier that 456 your heavier ball is in 123. Weigh 1 vs 2 to discover the heaviest. If they balance, 3 is your answer.

I,m sure some posh wind up clocks do AM + PM , hence my lack of certainty on this one

Of course they do. You can get wind up alarm clocks that also have a date function. In this case they would need to know AM from PM to know when to roll the date over.

A man went to a party and drank some of the punch. He then left early. Everyone else at the party who drank the punch subsequently died of poisoning. Why did the man not die? (the man did not add the poison and nothing was added to punch after he left.)

A man is travelling towards the middle of a field. He knows as soon as he gets there, he's going to die, but he carries on anyway.

Explain.

Is he falling from a great height into the middle of the field and is there a sabre toothed tiger in the very same field.

Another way would have been if there had been a leak in a gas boiler, and all the people died at the party died from carbon monoxide poisoning, which has no smell, but by leaving early the levels in the mans' bloodstream were not at fatal levels.

- As said above, they are falling from a great height, with no way of slowing themselves done, (parachute). or in a plane nose-diving from 35,000ft into the field after its wings fell off.

Or there just feeling very depressed and are going to kill themselves, or being executed,

The possibilities are enless really

1: A man goes to bed at 10.30pm. He winds his alarm to go off at noon. How many hours sleep does he get?

a) he never set the alarm, only wound it.
b) he might be a light sleeper and get up without it going off (which it wouldn't, see a).

Poor question.

Had these emailed to me this week (it's not new though), you need to answer them quickly:

Mary's father has 5 daughters; Nana, Nene, Nini, Nono, what is the name of the 5th daughter?

Also:
A mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done.

Next, a blind man comes into the shop who wants to buy a pair of sunglasses; how does HE indicate what he wants?
