Ahh yes but as you're a 'dreaded JCL' certain elements on here won't take you seriously. You'll notice over time that we have some very anal people on here though

Tut, tut at your age you should know better, just like me. Actually it's a matter of individual preference is it not ? I don't care for smokers but I don't moan about them. I'm not a huge fan of people eating greasy chips smothered in vinegar at games either but I don't let it bother me. Why a handful of people have decided that they're the arbiters of good taste and anybody with a tattoo or a piercing (let alone both) is a 'twat' makes me wonder if they don't have something more important in their lives.

Absolutely mate, god knows what they must think of Will Hoskins and Liam Bridcutt, both have full sleeves, not sure if they have ear-rings but i wouldn't be surprised.

I'll be the first to admit that I find facial piercings unpleasant whoever has them and tattoos on the neck and face are repulsive. A lot of tattooists won't do tattoos on these areas and also the the hands. However in the main I don't tend to judge people too much by their appearance as long as it's relevant to the situation they're in. Somebody who turns up for an interview in jeans for instance, just not right (okay I work in offices so I'm sure some jobs that's not an issue). I remember one time I interviewed a guy for a job who was reeking of garlic, he was sitting about eight from me but it was overpowering, curiously he didn't get the job.

I'm a bit concerned...i'm agreeing with BHA EX... What f***ing goon that Andrew is.

I've no tatttoo's, never had the bottle to get it done, but way back in Fawcet times i got 2 piercing in left ear, and 1 in right ear one summer. They made me take out 1 in each ear when back to school, but have kept the small silver hoop ever since.
My two little boys have made comment and reminded me recently that i have it, otherwise it never get commented on.

And Andrew, as for not getting employed by you, i'm currently running a £38,000 bathroom installation project for a couple of solicitors.
(Typical clients are QC's, lawyers, and Head of Compliance at Citibank; they see through any ridiculous stereotypes you've assumed here)

If you ever get remotely get close to having that kind of money to spunk on a bathroom, you'll no doubt be looking for a company who are fully competent in that specialist field; i wonder if your views will change because they are run by a guy with one small earring or not ?

I've got tattoos, did have my eyebrow/ear pierced in my younger years!

If you go around judging people based solely on their looks you aren't going to get very far. Why not get to know people before you form an opinion, manners cost nothing!

I think Andrew is just a kid hence his rather forthright and foolish assertions (I blame the parents). It doesn't take bottle to get a tattoo as most times it's just like a scratch sensation and provided to take care of them after they're done (believe it or not many tattooists recommend haemorrhoid cream !) there's no pain at all. As I said earlier anything near a bone (such and the small of the back) stings but an arm or a shoulder no problem. The problem with both piercings and tattoos is that they can be a bit habit forming and some people go over the top. That Pompey fan for example looks ridiculous and I as I've said before I find facial piercings quite repugnant. As much as anything it's a question of knowing when to draw the line (no pun intended).

The only thing to remember is that tattoos are a lot easier to get than get rid of. Very soon I will be getting one done over a tattoo on my wrist that is no longer relevant. For what it's worth my ex wife has a very large tattoo on her shoulder with my name on it, rather hard to miss especially as where she lives is rather warmer than here. This is where you need to think about what you're doing !

But at the end of the day im not worried about what people think of me, whether they dont like tattoos or ear-rings is their problem, the fact that i do like them is my choice. Oh and if i feel like wearing a football shirt i will, i really dont care what others think of that, if it really bothers them then they are pretty shallow in my opinion and i probably wouldn't want to share too much time with them in the first place.

Spot on!

Also agreed with what somebody said earlier about people with tattoos/piercings not getting jobs, surely it shouldn't even come into it, if you're good at doing a job then why does anything else matter?!

had my ear pierced, took it out because it didnt suit me. i do though have four tattoos so far with plans for plenty more. i like tattoos, theyre interesting and nearly always have a story behind them, theyre a good talking point, and at the same time, theyre absolutely nobodies business, if you dont like them on someone else, keep it shut, it aint your body its on.

Up to a point, but if you were, say, the manager of a posh restaurant, would you employ as a waiter someone with, to quote my earlier example, a spider's web tattooed on their face and 'f*** of you ****' tattooed on their forehead? They might be the best waiter in the world but I think most maitre d's would baulk at the idea. For some jobs personal appearance is important, even if your attitude is "I don't give a f*** what anybody thinks of me!"

I have to go along with this. I wouldn't been keen on employing somebody with obvious tattoos or multiple piercings. They do tend to send a less than positive message. I remember that not that long ago most security guards had to put sticking plasters over facial piercings although this was mainly a safety factor. My ex step daughter left her school because she refused to remove her nose piercing (she was 16 at the time), the school also said this was for safety reasons but as she didn't play any sport I couldn't see the problem however know what a litigious society America is I wasn't too surprised. The irony was that she then went to a small technical college and ended up getting her G.E.D. eighteen months before she would have done had she stayed at the school.

I do agree with you, however anyone in a customer facing role would have to consider the implications of having facial tattoos etc. A friend of mine is a coach driver and has several tattoos including his full back and' forearms, the forearms are obviously visible if he wears a short sleeved shirt but nobody at the coach company is worried about that.

However he wanted to get a dragon tattoo on his neck, and did indeed consider the implications of this so sought out advice from his supervisor who in turn took it up with the bosses. They said if it was on the right side of his neck then they were not too worried, but they would rather it was not on the left side where it would be visible to passengers as they got on the coach.

I think most people who have tattoos do consider the implications and personally if i had tattoos on my face, hands etc then i wouldn't even consider a job as a waiter, however i would be pissed off if i had been turned down for a job on a building site, especially if i was pretty good at what i did.

Absolutely, I think we're all agreed (well most of us) that leaving aside the aesthetics (which are purely a personal preference) SOME tattoos and piercings can disqualify you from SOME jobs, but it's a very small combination of job/adornment to which it applies. As you rightly say in most cases it shouldn't matter a jot.

A case in point - I once knew a web designer who'd been doing the front end of a system where I was doing the database back end. We communicated by phone and email, and then one day before delivery I went to a meeting in their offices and we actually met. He was COVERED in tattoos: face, shaved head, neck, arms, hands, and his face had so many piercings it looked like a jeweller's shop window. One of his colleagues made a joke about it saying something along the lines of "As a rule we don't usually let Terry meet people, we just keep him chained up in the office and feed him raw meat." They didn't have a problem, indeed as they considered themselves a cutting edge media company they probably thought his appearance was an asset.

Another thing is that a lot of people with tattoos are either in or are ex forces, they tend to be good employees don't they ?

Not me but the wife has her arms and most of her back done. Her back is amazing. She had a big design which has recently been added to with flowers, birds, butterflies and a bee.
