Is Communism defunct though? China is still a Communist country and whilst it does not use the hammer & sickle, it does still have a red flag and kill a lot of people.

I see your point though, it just seems strange to me that Nazism is considered that bit more evil than other regimes when statistically they were not really. I think the main reason is down to the Holocaust (which simply by having a name sets it aside from other genocides) and the seemingly industrial methods used to persecute the Jews (though again persecuting the Jews was even at the time most definitely not confined to the Nazis).

China is about as communist as Florida.

National Socialism sets itself apart from other bloodsoaked regimes in that it's core aim was the physical extermination of the Jews and any others considered "sub-human". Stalin was obviously guilty of the murder of millions but few would view his crimes as ideological ones rather than the actions of a demented power crazed uber-nationalist.

If we are playing numbers games more people died in the Bengal famine and other preventable famines under the Raj than under Franco, does that make the British Empire better or worse than Spanish clerical-fascism ?

I find the use of the swastika offensive (partly because I am the grandson of a Jewish Pole) but I also believe that the right to offend is part of democracy.

I think a high proportion of people who sport swastika's share some views of Hitler. I don't think a high proportion of people wearing communist symbols share the views of Stalin.

Where can I look up this league table of evil? Where did the Nazi's finish, did they make the play-offs?

I think you are missing the most obvious point. Hundreds of thousands of British citizens lost their lives, loved ones and homes directly because of the Nazi regime. None of the other contenders in your evil league had that direct effect on Britain within living memory. It is not really surprising then that people may still bear a bit of a grudge is it?

A52 seagull also makes a good point about the continuation of that evil ideology. It seems to me you are just arguing just for the sake of having a pop at LI.

I think the difference is that the Nazis were inheritently evil while Communism, in it's purest form, is well intended but in practice proved unworkable.

Saddam Hussein was unusual in as much as he didn't really have a political agenda of any description.

Indeed. It is possible to buy a furry winter hat in the North Laine bearing communist symbols. Whereas it is NOT possible to buy a furry winter hat in the North Laine bearing nazi symbols. As the bloke with the heavy suitcase said: 'I rest my case'

But Mussolini didn't have a swastika as his party's symbol. If he had, they'd have been late or cancelled.

THe Swastica is claerly aligned with the German Nazi state. It offends Jews, Poles, Gypsies, Slovakians, Hungarians, people who fought in WW2 etc. It is banned in many countries.

The hammer and sickle was used by the Russian Bolsheviks but also by Communist and other social revolutionary parties.

For example. Bologna Communist Party was the biggest communist party outside Moscow, it is revered, delivers great services, it is supported, it used the hammer and sickle. It did not offend.

Comparing the two symbols is childish, ridicolous and condones the swastika.
