Zamora to Hammers

Sad to see Bobby go - seemed to be a Hoddle player, thus not a Pleat player (and it worked the other way round too). Didn't expect him to be banging in the goals this season, rather one for the future - but didn't get much of a chance, just the odd 10 minutes here or there.
Unfortunately already the BBC reports and so on are writing him off as a "Premiership flop" etc - pretty unfair based on the chances he had.
But anyway. Can't complain about signing Defoe, reckon he's the type of six-yard-box finisher we need and hopefully he'll ease up a little on the red card count.
Good luck Bobby, hope he does well - though, since he's now playing for West Ham, hopefully not *too* well.
As for the fee and any sell-ons for Albion - well, for all his promise, there's not much real hard evidence his value should have gone UP since last summer, is there?

Apparently our deal for Paul Robinson fell through after agreeing a fee and personal terms, because it emerged that loaning him back to Leeds for the rest of the season would take them over their loans limit. Nice to know everyone involved was really on the ball for this one. . .

Forgive me if I am wrong, but weren't the two first choice strikers who got West Ham relegated last season............Kanoute and Defoe

No, Fredi was injured (or "injured") most of the time.

The strike force that got them relegated was Jermaine Defoe and Ian Pearce. . .

I'm surprised at Spurs for letting Bobby go, but it's one of those things - I suspect West Ham and Spurs will both be better off in the short-term.

Players like Saha, Beattie, Ormerod etc show that it can take a season to settle in the Premiership, but I think Spurs have the £15 million and they want O'Neill, so they're wanting to go all out for a place in Europe to give the new manager something to work with.

Can Spurs accomodate Defoe, Keane and Kanoute? I would imagine one of them won't be there at the start of next season

I'm not arguing with that. All I'm saying is that I reckon he's as good (or better) than Defoe. You'll note that the reason West Ham are in division one is in part the fault of Defoe not playing well enough. All season long, pundits were saying that Roeder had been let down by his big name players (they'd finished 7th the previous season) and Defoe was one of them.

Wouldn't Keane drop into midfield?

Have a word Simster, Zamora aint fit to lick Defoe's boots, Defoe is one of the best young strikers in the country, Bob may not even be in the top 10. In fact I think Bobby will struggle at West Ham, don't reckon he's much more than a 2nd Division striker. We will see.

Pardew said last week he rated Defoe as one of the top 4 English strikers. He also said that his pricing of Defoe had scared some clubs off.

From this, I really don't reckon West Ham would have sold Defoe for a deal worth less than £10m to them. Pardew therefore rates Zamora as a £3m player but I reckon the 2 sides have decided to value BZ as £1.5m so Spurs don't have to pay us any money.

If this is the case, we have been seriously screwed over (and presumably we don't get any sell-on clause with the Hammers)

Owen, Shearer, Smith, Beattie.
I rate them all higher than defoe.

Well so do I and I would also add Rooney to that list (but the above was what Pardew said)

defoe is better than Smith and Beattie, it's just a shame he's gone to a two bob outfit like Spurs

no he isn't!
Beattie has a better scoring rate, and Smith is proven in Europe.
Defoe's disciplinary record is worse than all of these too.

Worse than Smith's?
Surely the only people with worse disciplinary records than Smith are currently serving time?

Top player, still - the kind of striker you can imagine defenders hating to play against. Which makes him even dumber for getting himself suspended so often.

As for Beattie. Well, certainly has surprised a lot of people.
As a Spurs fan, though, I'm hoping having Keano and Defoe in the same side will mean we play the ball on the ground as much as possible. No point hoofing to either of them, is there.

With all respect, £3m now for Bobby, after £1.5m last summer? Why? Where's the logic?

Best of luck to Bobby - and West Ham surely a much better place to be than unregarded at Spurs.

We saw enough of him to realise he's a hugely talented player. Whilst we were in the 3rd and 2nd division the manager(s) had the wit and wisdom to build the team around him, and would have wanted to in the !st, but were held back by insufficient funds to buy/keep the right strike partner and/or supplying midfielder.

Defoe might look a very good player - it's what Spurs seem to think at that price - but that isn't much use if he goes on getting red-carded, it seems 3 times already this season! It says quite a lot about Pleat that he sees this kind of talent above that of BZ's skills.

West Ham manager Alan Pardew added: "The fee was very, very good in today's market and I insisted the move wouldn't happen unless I got Bobby Zamora as part of the deal.

"The first offer they made was a straight money offer with Bobby coming on loan. If you look at this deal in the cold light of day you've got to say it's a good deal for us."

On this basis, there must be a case for arguing a sell on clause for Bobby.

Talking to a Wham fan tonight, he was pleased to see the back of Defoe 'cos of his discilplinary record :shootself

I don't like criticising Dick Knight, I support 90% of what's he's done, but I never supported the sale of Zamora for £1.5 m. Dick used the depressed market and sell-on clause as an excuse- today we know the value of the sell-on clause; nothing.

The only reason to sell in a depressed market is to buy in the same market. We were never in a position to use the money to buy players so it was just bad business.

In the end we sold off our biggest asset for a profit of £900k. I would have preferred to keep him for the extra two years on his contract and let him leave for nothing at the end of it. There would still have been a chance that someone might have come in with a better offer in that time.

I wish Bobby all the best. I still think he'll be a top premiership striker one day (and I'm old enough to have seen Peter Ward, Michael Robinson, Andy Ritchie et.c).

I think Bobby found his level last season. He scored 14 goals in Div 1, but some of them were penalties. It was clear that he wanted to try his luck at a higher level, and he was not given much chance to succeed at Spurs, but no Prem goals in 18 appearances is not too clever, although I concede he was on the bench a lot of the time.
