Generally it is, very rare when the term is not used as part of a derogatory statement. Sorry but it's nothing like calling a Welshman a 'Taff' or a Scotsman a 'Jock'.

I'd have to beg to differ there.

From an outsiders point of view on more than a few occasions Iv'e heard those terms used in a derogatory manner.

But I understand it's the context in which they are said.

If you said

"you silly Paki bugger"

or

"you silly Taffy bugger"

And both are said in a light hearted jovial manner and a slap on the back I don't see the problem with either.

I notice you left out "Paddy" why was that?

Because Iv'e heard many an Englishman use that in a derogaroty way directed at the Irish.

But all that is irrelevant - you can talk amongst yourselves about how racist you think certain words and their use in a certain context might or might not be racist. If the Pakistani people find the term racist, then it is. No discussion.

No I just have enough respect to understand that a Pakistani finds it racist to be called a Paki, so therefore I respect his position and don't use it. Not "misguided pc" or whatever you waffled on about - just respect.

Well then obviously the issue is with the people responding to the term "Paki".

If you take your average racist by carrying on and responding in kind to their taunts you are empowering them through your reactions.

If you ignore them and treat the term as something not offensive you disepower them and take away the stigma of the word so it becomes useless to the bigots.

It's no dfifferent to the term "wog" over here.

20 years ago people sooked about it being used, these days the term is for the most part now not seen as offensive but in some way endearing and a special part of the culture.

We even have movies and stage plays poking fun at the "wog" culture and people of all races go to those shows and laugh their arses off because we all have a "wog" mate who does those exact things in those shows.

But we don't laugh because we are racists we laugh because we see that as being part of a newer part of Australian culture.

What a f***ing stupid thread to start. I don't normally respond to things that I think are just stupid, but really, what is the f***ing point of this thread? Apart from showing us all that you're a complete moron.

Then truly they need to embrace that English tradition of keeping a stip upper lip and get the hell over it.

It's only a word for flips sake.

Good lord we are taught as kids "sticks and stones may break my bones but names shall never hurt me"

It's time people embraced that philosophy.

How exactly was I being racist?

By pointing out that other terms used can be taken as being similar to the term "Paki" and yet raise no such debate?

You see it's your kind of misguided PC attitude that has actually ruined Australia, you can't have a debate about any kind of foreign influence without some left wing plonker screaming racism.

There was a very interesting comment today in the Herald Sun which highlights the stupidity of these PC idiots in Australia and how they turn a bit of friendly banter into something more sinister.

In regards to things said at the cricket, some stupid left wing woman was rubbishing on about racist yobbos, and then a breath of fresh air in the form of an Indian gentleman who's the head of the Victoria Indian Association stated he doesnt feel someone saying "curry muncher" is overly offensive and if someone does find it offensive then they are pretty weak.

To that man i say bravo.

But truly i can't take you very seriously.

Because it very much seems that you are the kind of person who would have hypocritical double standards tucked away there somewhere.

Possibly the kind of person who's laughed at an Irish joke and yet been offended by one told about a Jew or maybe an Aboriginal.

Judging by the way a lot of Australians think of Aborigines it's not hard to see why you can't see why that's racist.

I don't respond to anyone, I just DON'T USE IT - geddit?

Have you spotted though that the people putting on Who Let the Wogs out and such are actually Greek themselves...

I don't use Wog as it is racist to some people of Lebanese and or Greek descent, so I don't use it at all - I don't stand on my soapbox or comment to trashy weekend papers about how racist it is - I JUST DON'T USE IT...

Heavens above you are like my Dad, trumpets he isn't racist but he is, and will defend his corner with his own opinion (which he utterly and completely believes is right when it isn't)...

Not sure where in Australia you live. I'd guess in Perth. Come live in Sydney in the South and I'm sure a few people will sort you out.

Oh please, no offence I'm betting all you know of the aborignals is through bullshit journalism and left wing muppets spouting crap.

The Aboriginals were treated the worst by the English that being your lot, not the Australians, that being mine.

COuld they have been treated better down the time? Sure.

But then again they weren't treated like the American Indians were treated and masacred or say the Bnglish butchering the Irish.

I myself have aboriginal cousins, but as a family they aren't aboriginals they are just our cousins, nothing more nothing less.

The most amusing thing of such comments is that when there is gang troubles involving aboriginals its never against white groups, its more often than not with islanders/maoris or asians.

So it's hardly this whole white vs black thing.

Watch the 2000 Olympics did we?

See who was chosen to light the flame over all other 20 million people in the country?, yup that's right, twas an aboriginal.

To put aside all the fake bullshit that's spouted about their situations, the biggest hurdle for aborignals in Australia isnt this suppossed "racism" its their own inability to move on into the 20th century.

But the best way to illustrate this fake perception is to highlight how much the aboriginal is lauded in Australian Rules football.

Some of these Aboriginal players are the best there is and worshiped by their fans and Aussie Rules is the most popular sport in the nation by a mile.

The only thing holding back an aboriginal kid from doing well in life here is their own inability to want to succeed, and funnily enough no matter what your skin colour thats the only thing holding any kid back.

Anybody under the age of seventy calling somebody a Paki neither knows nor cares whether that person's country of origin is Pakistan. Therefore it is ALWAYS racist. And ALWAYS employed by a feral low-IQ scumbag whose problem should surely now be focussing on the can-do New Europeans who are taking the jobs that were always there for the taking. But different skin colour will always be the first point of attack for the stupid.

Sydney is a f***ing dive, I would enver wish to live in that shithole.

And yes people do get sorted out there, unfortunately by gangs of various ethnicity.

No wonder you have such views as you do comming from that cespit of racial hatred.

But the bit you leave out is it's not so much just the aussies, its the lebos punching on with the kiwis/islanders etc that you conviniently overlook.

And yes the people who put the shows on are greek, and of course they wish to laugh about being wogs and arent offened by the term but wear it as a symbol of Aussie pride.

Seriously you are so out of touch with Australia it's not funny.

But for the record I'm from Melbourne way, which incidently is where all those "wog" type parodys were born, i guess we don't take ourselves as serious as the cockroaches do.

I went to a school with alot of children of Croatian or Italian descent, and you know what offended alot of them more than calling them wogs?

Calling them Aussies.

Tis a strange world we live in.

Personally I find it a tad disconcerting that Aussie kids without a bad bone in their body tell 'Abo' jokes without batting an eyelid. I blame the parents. Reckon racial get-along-ness in Oz is currently on a par with the UK circa Alf Garnett circa 1973. Give it 20 years it'll all be good.

Nope and I don't know anyone who does I suppose thats why it isn't considered racist. I've never heard anyone spit it out in a derogatory way the way "Paki" is used....I think the intent of the word creates the meaning, Paki was used in such a spiteful, derogatory way it has become seen as a racist insult. The term Aussie although usually proceeded by the word "f**king" hasn't
