Apart from being probably too short sighted for a call up, the slightly cowardly but honest truth is that I'd look to leave before bearing arms.

The reason for that is that I have no desire to fight for a political establishment that has generally treated my generation badly over time (removing the right to a free higher education, cutting of various youth services when I was younger, Brexit, highest taxes ever on us now as working people).

Given the lack of national pride younger people now have about Britain, I think any mass conscription attempt of young men would probably be a bit of a shit show.
I think the decline in national pride is only part of the equation, generally speaking this country (like others in the west) is socially balkanised across a range of different areas, and that means people are at completely different ends of the spectrum from each other in a way that did not previously exist. That is not to paint the past through rose tinted spectacles but the variety of different cultural perspectives that exist in the U.K. today is a new reality.

Accordingly, the concept of conscription is for the birds, especially for Gen Z according to a recent poll. The facts are that even if 50% of that generation (or even the wider populace) were willing to fight, if the other 50% isn’t, then those willing to fight will soon change their minds.

That is just my opinion, as ever.

Well this is a nice surprise. Naturally I said yes, continuing a long line of service in the Triggaaar family, and thanks to my grandfather's heroics and Victoria Cross I've been made General of the Sussex regiment.

So you all have to call me sir.

Really ? You've never mentioned it

My initial thought would be no.
But soon the propaganda machine would start up, the Government would put propaganda everywhere about how the Russians are doing this and that, whether true or not. They'd take over all the social media, making sure it was full of stories of women being raped and children murdered.
The news will be full of speeches telling us how good it is to fight for the country.
Let's be honest, we all fell for that £300 million bus from Boris.

Yes, because the horrors of living in an enslaved nation are so extreme that life wouldn't then be worth it.

They wouldn't let most leave. You'd need a small boat.

What you have managed to do @dwayne is set up a poll asking if you would fight for your country and then give a completely different hypothetical question of whether you would fight for your freedom. Which question would you like people to answer, as I suspect I'm not alone in having very different answers to those two questions :dunce:

I guess it's a natural talent you have
Where have I said fight for freedom ?

Well this wouldn't be fighting for your country unless you made a typo in the thread title
Hmmm ok but if Putin did take Sussex that would be equivalent for going for the whole country as the whole country would go to war with Russia over it. Think you're overthinking it.

For this country, no. For these politicians, absolutely not. For my family, absolutely, but I really hope it never happens just for the ego of some people who’ve been afforded far too much power that they simply don’t deserve.

Fortunately in war, there are separate battles for this depending on what reason you and the enemy forces also signed up… You’ll be in the family and friends fight.

Nah, what I would do for my country if the shit hit the fan is bugger off to County Limerick, The Shetlands, some abandoned farmhouse in the arse end of France or somewhere like that.
Thank me later.
How different i guess we all are, me knowing a foreign force were invading Brighton beach would be happy to head down to there and put up the best fight i could, I’m 55 and would do it all the time i could walk!!
