I think the poll results reflect NSC's ageing demographic rather than the general willingness to fight for one's homeland

I think we are all well aware that they’re probably not looking to put men “in the autumn of their lives” straight onto the front lines of a battlefield. That does pose a difficult question. How happy are we with our kids being sent to war?

In my case the answer is “not at all happy” - but I think we’ve seen Putin’s type before. I’m not convinced he’ll stop unless he’s made to.

If it comes to it, I would rather Putin was stopped in Ukraine, than further west in ten years time. If my children chose to serve (one is highly likely to, the other it’s too early to say) I would not stand in their way, but I wouldn’t push them in either direction, and I’d respect whatever decision they made. I hope that they never have to make the choice, but I genuinely believe that avoiding this depends on providing Ukraine with everything it needs, right now.

Other than professional soldiers no right minded person would ‘want’ to fight, conflict is horrific.

Thankfully for our civilians for 80 years we have kept our involvement in conflicts to our forces, and this is the result of a world order that hasn’t tolerated dictators invading other countries, and through diplomacy, trade agreements, aid and support has meant much of the world has largely been peaceful.

Civilians taking up arms is a desperate choice, and one Ukrainian’s were forced to do. I don’t expect many in the towns and villages had the means to grab a flight to Thailand and live out their lives somewhere else.

War is always and always has been most brutal on the poor of the world. I can’t even begin to imagine making that choice, it is devoid of the existential threat, terror, context and emotion you would feel if it came to it.

Having the decision above is a huge luxury, one that is no way enlightening on the struggle Ukrainians have faced, or the decision any of us would have to make it it came to it.

Good question. Despite being in my early 50s and without wishing to glamorize warfare at all, I'd like to think so.

There is a time for everything - a time for war and a time for peace amongst them. "In war, prepare for peace; in peace, prepare for war." (Sun Tzu)

Experience of 2 years in the school CCF Army section where I learned to march, strip a .303 Lee Enfield rifle, camouflage and a few other things.

There's tens of thousands of Ukrainian men from all walks of life who never planned to fight, but were willing to sacrifice for their nation.

Whilst we can all hope that a similar situation doesn't arise here, would that we would all have a similar attitude of selflessness and help where we could.

This may very well not involve front line fighting of course. But given the circumstances, one should do what one can.

Probably wouldn't have a chance, given if Putin was committed to attacking the UK, I would expect the South East to be a nuclear wasteland.

Just to be clear, I wouldn't fight 'for my country' but for the right reasons I would. Like the situation you then describe with Putin invading Sussex ? Of course I would and I know my wife and kids would be alongside me.

If you wouldn't defend against a dictator bringing their troops destroy your family, friends and freedom, is there anything you would be prepared to defend ?

Silly hypothetical, Putin has almost destroyed his nations military forces trying to conquer the Ukraine. Whilst he should be stopped, I genuinely feel he is no threat to the rest of Europe. I'm also not prepared to fight for Starmer, Farage, that Tory woman, the House of Lords, the City of London, His Majesty the King and Lord Sugar.

The answer should be yes from everyone, if threatened by a foreign power we’ve not provoked. It doesn’t always mean picking up a gun, millions would be needed in manufacturing and other support capacities. I expect if everyone’s way of life, freedoms, family and very existence was threatened then I expect all right minded people would say yes.
