Yes. One of them quite probably saved my life, or at least helped me avoid serious injury, when I was a kid.

Thats cool.:) I wont elaborate on why I hate them after numerous dealings as I dont want to encourage the wankers on here, pro or anti. I dont think they deserve any special rights and I am going to leave it at that.

Prefer to rant about other issues.

...as for hypocrisy, shall we first deal with the "travellers" who demand to have fixed sites and want to build static homes while invoking their right to be recognised as a seperate culture?

I don't know what you're on about, i was using the dale farmers and others like them as an example.

Yes.

One of them quite probably saved my life, or at least helped me avoid serious injury, when I was a kid. I was spending the summer working on a fruit farm picking strawberries. Every day a van would pick us up in the village and drive us out there. One day I was sat at the back of the van, leaning on the door, when a lady noticed that the handle wasn't shut properly. She shouted out for me to move away from the door, a split second before we went over a bump and it sprung open, that lady was a Romany.

Oh good a positive story at last.

I answer that.

It's because a society built on acceptance takes decades upon decades to build and filter through the classes. It needs to built on the key pillars of education and understanding.

Acting morally outraged at everything you disagree with doesn't help make it happen any quicker I'm afraid.

Take a stance but be willing to listen and discuss it. That's how the world changes.

See for me there is a difference between Romany and these new sort of travellers, the Romany come across ok i cant say i have really had any dealings with them, but its these new bread travellers that are a real issue, they just a major drain on areas. They cause alot alot of trouble and thats why they have the names they have today and why people thrown on them.

So it's our fault and not there's that we don't understand why they leave human shit in kids playing fields when they've left or mug our children or try to burgle our houses then ?
None of the blame rests with them not respecting the local community's they've decended upon.
And yes I'm speaking from experience

This thread isn't about why you are prejudiced. It's about why so many people are. So, no, your experience doesn't explain why so many people find it acceptable to generalise about this group.

And there's nothing condescending about asking you to justify your views.

So how about you try to answer my question about how prejudice against travellers in 2011 is different to prejudice against African-Caribbeans in the 60s and 70s (or Jews in lots of places throughout history) which has been justified in the same way. Like I asked, is it just that this time it's true? That they really are all bad?

Oh, and who is PC Arse? Anything to do with Edna?

The majority of posters here have a fully justified low opinion of these travellers, you have clearly never experienced them and yet you talk as though you know what you're saying, do you have any living with five miles of you ? I very much doubt it. Sorry, I shouldn't have said PC Arse, I appreciate that you're pretty stupid so no wonder you missed the point.

Why do you come across as being about 12 years old when someone questions your views? Was not Was asked a perfectly reasonable question. Stupidity? Your reply speaks volumes.

Speak for yourself there. It appears that there are three or four people expressing bigoted views, based on their own experiences, with about the same number countering them. Considering the number of people who have viewed the thread, but probably not posted, who knows what the true balance of opinion is. My guess is that there are many who find the comments offensive but are afraid to post against them for fear of the response, which given your counter attacks would appear justified.

WnW makes some good points about what life was like in the 60's and 70's, try being Irish in the 70's and it wasn't much fun, I remember it...I was there.

Expect a cranky i-know-you-are-but-what-am-i within the next ten minutes.
Personally, i have no opinion of these traveller folk. Just the same as I don't have one of the French as a collective or the gays as all one and the same or black people as generally very like each other.

Hahaha you're deluded & I can honestly say you have no idea what you're talking about. I'm not even going to reply to your next self righteous comment as your view is not valid, I've lived around travellers all my life and know exactly what they get up to but you just keep telling yourself it's a couple of bad apples giving the rest a bad name .... No skin off my nose

I'd rather be deluded than bitter and hateful.
Long live your nasal skin.

I think it is because the generalisation with travellers is borne of experience, rather than ignorance and suspicion.

Not bitter & hateful mate & I'm not going to go into it but let's just say you have no idea what they get up to, I've known a few in my younger days & let's just say if you are the good citizen you make yourself out to be you'd not be defending them.... Believe what you want pal & belittle me on here I don't care but its plainly obvious you do not know much about what they do.

Nasal skin ? What you on about ?

I was answering the original question. Read my post again, I was talking about society being more educated. That doesn't mean just me and you but also the travelling community. If they learnt to stop certain actions that alienate them (like the mugging and attempted burglary that you mentioned) then the world would be a better place.

I'm not taking sides. We all need to sort our act out.

I did and the thread was gone almost instantly!

And replaced with this one (not read it all yet but it seems to be going down the same lines).

Aah yeah sorry mate, totally agree with you there... I'm sure there's got to be a way both sets of community's can live together without all the shit & yes it will take an effort from both sides.
I do think the Dale farm thing was one great big balls up & was handled pathetically as this will only lead to more travellers setting up illegal camps elsewhere but then I suppose you'd have to take into consideration on how it was affecting the local community.... There is no easy answer really IMO
