1997 for me. I remember when Gary set the site up and advertised it on the Seagulls Mailing list.

as a new member of this forum commander you will have no idea how anarchic NSC used to be,you are probably to young to remember the fanzine culture that inspired manx to create the origional format.
the difference between the two styles might be compared to catherine tate V my family(trying to come up with a contemporary example)

No mate, I remember the fanzine culture well, still have a lot of Gulls Eye's in my room somewhere. And although I never posted on the original forum I do know what your saying, this place is far too geeky and far too moderated, and it pisses me off that you cant post whatever you like without fear of being hounded for offending someone.

I first came across the Seagull Server in August 1996 (sorry, but I'm quite anal about these things and know this was a couple of days after we won the first game of that season against Chester and it looked like we might actually do well in Division 3 - what fools we were...)

Though not a real regular myself at first I'm quite sure the message board was around then, despite what it says about "1997" under Manx Seagull's name... After all, it was one of the prime ways in which Fans United (Feb 1997) was spawned and organised wasn't it?

Tubthumper and Juan Albion were already around then, as were quite a few who are still about but who've changed usernames since...

You are quite right the Seagulls Server was around in 1996, the seagulls server only had a guestbook which fans could leave comments, but not reply to other users posts.

Subsequently NSC was born in early 1997 using a forum setup allow better posting, banter, slagging off, whinging etc. :lolol:

oh and forgot moderating to enable certain people to have god like powers.. you know who you are

Do you have any idea of the exact date, so we can all have a big 10th anniversary slagathon to mark the occasion?

No but I could invent one :lolol:

Seriously.. Wozza might have a better idea, as he had a lot of the material archived.

He also had a brilliant website full of sounds and commentaries from the Goldstone.

Shame that's not still about, there was some FANTASTIC material on it.

(Mind you, Adrie would only pinch it and put it on youtube)

Just done a bit of snooping about on the web.archive site and found a visiters counter set at a date of 5th April 1996 but this was for the seagulls server.

The earliest posting listed on the NSC page within the Achive is 8th July 1997, but I am sure NSC was created earlier.

The link is http://web.archive.org/web/19970722113110/homepages.enterprise.net/gjc/

Looking at the archive site quite a number of posters used their true names, not many people do that now.

Also there is further info on the Wikipedia site. Not sure who gave them the information though:

North Stand Chat
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
North Stand Chat is an Internet Forum for fans of Brighton and Hove Albion F.C. which is an English football team based in Brighton. They play at Withdean Stadium and are currently playing in the Football League One. The forum takes its name from a stand at the club's previous home, the Goldstone Ground in Hove, which was the club's home from 1902 until 1997 when it was demolished to make way for a shopping centre.

North Stand Chat started off as a mailing list. It became a fully fledged internet forum in 1996 as part of the Seagulls Server (which can still be viewed via the Internet Archive [1])

The poor management of the club by the board (Greg Stanley, Bill Archer and David Bellotti) at this time caused great concern amongst the fans and North Stand Chat became a popular place to meet online for fans to discuss different tactics and actions. Events such as the Mansfield Town boycott, the march on Bill Archer's house and Fans United were all organised through North Stand Chat. Contacts were made meaning that things could be organised away from match days, at pretty short notice.

The board was a great help to the club in organising events to ensure that permission was given to build their new home at Falmer Stadium.

The board currently has over 3,700 members, following a heavy cull of unused accounts, and over 1,670,000 posted messages. The most users ever online was 399 on 27th July 2004. A collaboration with the club's management means that fans' queries, on pretty much any issue, are posted through the Ask the Club forum on the board.

Fans of rival teams, such as Crystal Palace F.C., Cardiff City F.C., Leeds United F.C. and Reading F.C. regularly post messages on the forum, and new users are always welcome.

The site, and its predecessors, have appeared in a number of newspapers, including The Times, generally being quoted as a source for a rumour, and the initial Seagulls Server site appeared in the book Build a Bonfire: How Football Fans United to Save Brighton & Hove Albion. References to activity on the board and liberal use of internet handles from it occurs on the "fans phone in" on BBC Southern Counties Radio.

1998 for me.
Don't forget Taffy, he was a forerunner of The Laughing Bluebird, but ruder!
I remember when Lush was Croydon Seagull and Barnet Seagull was a mere snip of a lad. What happened to Old fat and bald?
Kay and I organised the first ever NSC sponsored game v Cardiff and we chose Andy Crosby as Man of the match, much to Micky Adams disgust who thought Kerry Mayo should have got it!

I still have a photo from that day when we presented Crosby the man of the match award... it is somewhere in the house
