Whoever gets it, it'll be interesting to see how much Boris wants to make life difficult for them.

If he boots some of his cronies upstairs in his resignation honours, the new starter would be faced with a slate of by-elections almost straight away.

Liz Truss is currently beating Rishi Sunak 62% to 38% in the race to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister and Conservative party leader, according to a fresh poll.

A new YouGov poll found 31% of Tory members plan to vote for Sunak and 49% intend to vote for Truss. The poll found 15% don’t yet know how they will vote, while 6% say they will abstain.

This means the foreign secretary is leading by 62% to 38% among those who will vote, a 24-point lead.

I disagree my friend is very left wing and when Jeramy Corbyn was leader he joined the Labour Party, when Kier Starmer became leader my friend resigned his membership.

We had along discussion on this he left as without Corbyn in charge he felt his personal views would not be represented so he will vote for another more left wing party or just not vote at all.

while my view was less principled but maybe more pragmatic,

Under a Tory led Government it is extremely unlikely that they will deliver any policy that he or I agree with.

While a Kier Starmer led government might not deliver all the things he agrees with but they will certainly deliver some.

Having and sticking rigidly to principles as my friend does clearly demonstrates that our current political system only gives him the option to cast a vote for a party that will return no representation or cast the vote for a party that he shares some of his views.

Proportional representation could be the answer were nearly everyone’s views can be heard

Your left wing pal can cast a vote for the SWP under FPTP. Having PR may mean he gets one SWP MP. Maybe not.

Having PR won't make labour more left wing. At least I hope not.

Let's imagine the electorate is around 30 million. Let's imagine we have 600 parliamenary seats. In a fair system, every parliamentary seat would represent 30,000,000/600 = 50,000 votes. I can tell you now, the SWP has nothing like this number of members (maybe 5,000) and most supporters of this party are members of it. So they don't deserve one seat in parliament. Not under any system.

Let's look at the 2010 election result. The Greens got nearly 300,000 votes. Did they get 6 seats? No, they got one. So they think this is unfair. They are right.

The tories got 10,000,000 votes. This means they should have got around 200 seats. They actually got 306. Labour got 8.5 million votes which should have won them 170 seats. Instead they got 258!. Liberals got 6.8 million votes. That should have won them 136 seats. Instead they got 57 seats. No wonder they want PR!!!!!

Yes, you have a point. Our system disproportionately rewards the more popular parties.

That said, I am not sure how much more power and influence the greens would weild with 6 MPs. And the SWP....well.

But of course you could argue that once a party had obtained a few seats then the nation would get more exposure to that party and then their popularily would increase over time, as it was for the National Socialists in Germany in the 1930s. I call that wishful thinking. If the SWP got any extra exposure they are likely to lose support.

My recommendation to people is . . . . vote! If you are very strongly motivated then propagandize! Look at all the excellent work certain folk do on NSC, promoting their pary of choice. Winner!

As I suggested earlier - Truss will walk this. I'd like to claim this as rocket science but that would be . . . . a lie.

Are you that much in love with the Conservatives that you wouldn't countenance a change? Despite the recent shit-show and the obvious failings over the last few terms?
What in God's name hold do they have over you, that you want to see them elected again?

This is definitely the weirdest part of Johnson's reign, why would anyone vote for that again. Do they think, well it could be worse, but how could it be worse? :lolol::lolol::lolol:

Sunak describes his economic plan as “common sense Thatcherism” despite wanting to raise corporation tax for businesses with the exception of smaller firms.

Those %s essentially match the betting odds, which makes sense.

Wouldn't be surprised if Chancellor goes to Mogg, or someone of his ilk.

There’s likely to br places in Sunak and Truss cabinets for Ben Wallace, Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat

Neither Truss or Sunak have committed to giving one another Cabinet jobs if they win

I voted for her when I was 30. A few years later and mainly as a direct result of her policies, I ended up leaving the country.

Was there a specific policy/policies or was it general?

It is important to note that this is a group of folks who, when polled, the majority were happy for the economy of this country to go to the dogs if it meant leaving the EU.
