One more thing I'd say is that you might consider yourself a confident, experienced driver, one more than capable of driving at 100 on a motorway.

But, given that the speed limit applies to everyone, would you be happy to have 17 year old lads, with no driving experience, and a pimped up Peugeot 106 GTI packed full of pissed mates, legitimately hammering it up the motorway in wet conditions at 100mph?

It's all about the revenue though as they plan to catch twice as many per annum!!

so what, the more they catch the less there will be. I agree motorway driving should be faster but people are basing that on what they perseve their skills to be. Go on any motorway journey and you will encounter dickheads who think they have a god given right to stay in the middle lane, truckers who tailgate other trucks, absolute fuckers who think the indicator gives you right of way irrespective of the speed of cars overtaking you. Unfortuanately, it is common sense that the laws of the land are imposed to protect the majority from the dickheads of society who think they are god.

And before you ask, yes, I admit I speed on motorways but I don't undercut and tailgate or hog the middle lane. In town, I try and ensure I am at the limit but on the two occassions I got tickets I certainly didn't bleat about.

On the radio today they have discussed Peterborough council who are handing out fines to people who drop litter. What's the problem. Don't drop litter. The same people who do are probably the same ones who complain about the untidy streets. It's the same with parking fines. There are some that are wrong but most are giving to people who don't give a toss about anyone else so long as they can park where they want and save themselves another 50 yrd walk.

Bring back the football season, at least the whingers on this site can moan about that!

No because if i was in charge i would do with cars what they have done with motorbikes and restrict them for two years to a certain power limit

Why not put speed restricters on cars like lorries?

Ho f**king horray ..... a sensible idea at last. Of course the government wouldn't dream of that because of all the revenue they would lose !!! They had the guts to force seatbelts to be fitted so why not restrictors :glare:

5) Cars are more powerful now, so the limits should be raised to 90, or 100 on motorways. Of course, if you raise it to 90, then the ones who've asked for that will drive at 110. Raise it to 100, and they'd drive at 120. So where do you draw the line?
I disagree with that one, I can't speak for anyone else but if I'm driving over the speed limit it because the speed i'm going at feels safe, taking into account conditions and then amount of traffic around me.
Speed limits should all be variable on the motorways, having the same speed limit at 10pm and 8am when the amount of traffic is massively different is just illogical.
I tend to keep my speed to two figures, but if conditions allow i'd usually drive at about 90-95mph, I defy anyone to sit in a car with me and tell me my driving is unsafe.

I'm hoping that I can't infer from this that you are opening the 'university students are wasting my tax money' argument? ;)

No the chavs of Whitehawk i unfortunately have to deal with for work from time to time.

Students tend to get a part time job and go into full time employment when they leave uni/college.

The ones that really annoy me are the long term "sick" like my brother who is actually fit enough to work but is too f***ing lazy!!! :tosser:

Most European cars have!!! Audi, BMW, VW and so on limit their cars to 155MPH

Lorries are restricted to 56MPH due partly to the fact a fully laden 38tonner takes a long time and distance to stop in unlike cars!!

From experience, the one thing that really impacts on the behaviour of young male drivers is the presence of other people in the car.

It is a fact that young men drive faster and more aggressively when they have passengers. They're slightly worse if the passenger is female (ie the girlfriend) and significantly worse when their male friends are on board. Peer pressure has a huge impact- no young lad wants to be accused of driving like a Granny, does he?

When you read reports of young men dying in cars, they nearly always have somebody else with them.

If you want to make the roads safer, harsh though it may be, a rule preventing young drivers from carrying passengers would have more impact than any speed limit changes IMHO.

I'd say it's far safer driving at 90mph on the motorway than 60mph on a lot of country roads.

Spot on the motorways are by far the safest roads in the country and the limits should be increased.

The limits in towns are sometimes too high though and would welcome 20MPH limits to become more frequent.

So what, how far does a Sports car need to stop when doing 50 and a school kid steps out in front of it?

Very true and i may be wrong but MYOB didn't they trial this in Ireland at some point??

I would also consider raising the age anyway ESPECIALLY for mopeds who's 16 yr old riders think they own the road more than most Taxis

EXACTLY there is the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's not the speed of the traffic it's the pedestrians who cross the road without looking OR in a dangerous place

The amount of people who will virtually drag their kids across a road within 10 yards of a safe crossing point is outstanding.

Some parents have no idea that the kids look up to them and the fact they cross unsafely is not apparent to them their kids will do the same.

Our 4 yr old has been taught how to cross the road properly and safely since he was old enough to walk. Some parents just don't care.

BTW a sports car stops in less distance at 50 than a 38tonner will at 30!!!!!

When it comes down to it, the limits and rules have to be dictated by the standards of the worst drivers, not the best.

You may think you're great, as do many people, but there are thousands who for various reasons- too fast, too slow, completely ignorant, short sighted, distracted, dizzy, dozy, selfish, arrogant, young, elderly, whatever- could not be trusted to drive appropriately in a 90mph zone, were they allowed to.

Therefore I reckon you'll just have to cope with it, and use your no doubt quite brilliant driving skills to get to your destination as quickly as you legitimately can. If you choose not to, don't come complaining to me about your £60 fine
;)

I kinda sit on the fence about speed cameras - there are better ways to enforce speed limits than fines.

What I find remarkable is the "don't speed therefore no fine" arguement on a site like this when a sizable majoity of people on here complain about strong stewarding at matches - could I not use the same arguement for that then - "don't stand up, don't swear or don't invade the pitch ( regardless of your dire need to thank Mayo ! ) and you won't have any hassle from the stewards" ? Not tarring anyone - just find it strange - rules is rules after all, regardless of where we are.

* sits back and awaits flaming *
Actually that is a very good point! The thread starter himself has made several posts about people standing at Withdean and that it's wrong.

So Steward 433 - I accept that you are a safe driver and you know what your're doing when you speed. In return you must accept that myself and others are 'safe' fans and we know what we're doing when we try to watch the match standing up. Don't be a government stooge, leave us alone!

BTW I have no strong views on speed cameras one way or the other.

The first paragraph should dictate all UK speed limits to 5MPH then :lolol:

A car's stopping distance is only as good as the vision and awareness of the driver.

I would like to ask you one thing- say your 3 year old daughter ran out into the road from behind a parked car, with no warning whatsoever, and was hit by a car doing 55 in a 40 zone.

Who would you blame?

Just a bit of devil's advocate, like...!
