Not even getting hopes up because all we are going to get is another barrage of this when England bat, it’s literally impossible to score off it..

Q to anyone old enough to remember (as a 90’s baby) apparently these tactics were fairly common in the 80’s, how did teams combat it then? It just seems impossible to score from without taking risks that will eventually get you caught.
To score from the Windies in the 70's, you just had to hit the ball forward. All their fielders were usually behind the wicket, other than a short leg. 4 slips, 2 gullys, deep square leg, fine leg, short leg. But, I say "just"....... :)

Mike Gatting only used his plan once. Malcom Marshall i think did the damage.

:lolol: what a silly sport this is, having watched the Aussies trying to prod and play defensive against this tactic maybe it is just better to take your chances and have a smash?

Seems inevitable at some point a ball will pop up off your glove or you’ll get out in some miserable bizarre way

There would be a HUGE dose of irony if we ended losing the first test through being too attacking and they lose this being too defensive. Mind numbing tactics that they’re in the position of giving England a real chance in this match.

Lyon was on crutches this morning? He’s up there padded up??? WTF

Could do himself permanent damage.

Hilarious. I cannot believe they’ve got themselves into the position of potentially worsening Lyon’s injury.

I think if Australia are out with a lead under 400 it's psychologically possible to start a chase, over 400, forget it.

Having said that England will probably be all out for under 300 so it's a moot point anyway.

I'm not old enough to remember either, but I think actually being Mohinder Amarnath helps quite a lot. Obviously most teams who went up against the West Indies back then just lost most of the time.
Bradman dealt with bodyline by backing away and cutting through the offside, reducing his average to merely 50-odd.
The rule stopping the fielding team from putting more than two fielders behind square on the legside is supposed to discourage this sort of bowling, because it's perceived as boring (and is of course completely unrelated to Bradman being on the committee that introduced the rule :lolol:).
