I was wrong in the sense, the only reason Poyet didn't leave a year earlier was because just when clubs were starting to look at him as there future manager. We finished 11/12 season with a whimper taking 13 points from the last 13 games. Falling from a comfortable play off spot to just above mid table. The clubs who were looking at him then decided to hold back, given the form shown in the last quarter of the season, which was relegation form. This also was around the time his mouth stated running away with him and his actions started becoming very erratic. If we hadn't had such a bad end to that season Poyet would have been gone a year earlier.

Wasn't one of the main reasons we ended 11/12 "with a whimper" because we had a run of particuarly tough games. Anyway IMHO we weren't good enough to make the playoffs that year. GP did a creditable job to finish where we did.

Total change of subject, how do you think he'll do at Sunderland?

What an amazing 3 years of football he delivered. I hope it proves the start of us always playing the beautiful game, bur I fear it will always be a purple patch I look back on very fondly.

A terrible shame that he and Tony couldn't get on for the good of what we had, but hey they couldn't, it happens. I don't suddenly hate (or even dislike) either of them for that.

There is a part of me that doesn't want him to do well though, not because I want Gus to fail personally but as I will always be wondering how far he could have taken us.

Yes, I agree. There is a part of me that thinks that too. If Sunderland turn it around and stay up playing beautiful football, everyone will be loving him on MOTD, and yes, I'll be that there thinking "if only ...".

Overwhelmingly though, I would rather he does well, as I think the way he wants to play the game deserves to succeed.

A mate of mine said he heard the same thing, but when I asked him how this came about in context he said JB was asked by JC if it and he said "it is possible" and gave an the QPR scenario as an example. Nothing more than hypothetical. When a team loses 1-3 with a killer penalty all of Greers own making, heads would drop.

The players have acted with complete dignity in very difficult circumastances. "If" however they cannot handle working with different managers they shouldn't be in the game because seeing how other managers work is a good thing and teaches them more.

as for the two knobs of commentators (and yes I know JB was good for us as a player) who spend most of the commentary time gossiping about anything including what Oscar is wearing that day
Warren Aspinal has the pee taken out of him because of the way he speaks(he had a stroke) but he knows more about football then either of the two mentioned.
I have had to listen to JC for years now and the prattling really gets on my tits.
why Oh why we have to listen to the radio SX commentary I really don't know as the one done for the extended highlights is far better when Tim Humphries and Bob Booker are far more entertaining and informative

Ive not read through the reams of comments on this thread but would like to suggest that when GP is announced I assume that there will be no court action.. and in turn this should free up money for us to spend on loans. I assume the club would have had to set aside funds for a court action with GP? Ignore me if this has been discussed. I wish him well and for sure Sunderland doing well would affect Palace.. in a bad way ;-)

My first reaction was to agree with you because if I was a Sunderland Board member I think I would be wanting Gus to be giving 100% to the team and his new job. I wouldn't want him to be off talking to lawyers and appearing at tribunals and wasting time trying to sue the backside off his previous club. However I think most of us realise that Gus can be pretty stubborn so as its an 'honour thing' with him, who knows.

1. Did Gus "bottle" the Man Utd and Liverpool games, opting to accept now to give himself time with the players before the Swansea and Newcastle games?

2. Do the Sunderland board have reservations about Gus - if not, then why not appoint 2 weeks ago?

If all parties wanted this to happen then why didn't it happen earlier?

On top of that Sunderland is a bad choice for him and he is a bad choice for them. They have just experienced and rejected a manager very similar to Poyet and they are not ready for more. It will not work.
If he comes after our best players with promises of money and Premiership glory it will just be the final betrayal for me.

I've though about this a lot and I just don't buy it. GP is a shrewd, manipulative man, who I think is far more in control of his emotions than others give him credit for. He plays up to the image of fiery South American but there is absolutely no way he'd lose it like Di Canio does/did. He's far too clever/ ambitious for that.

They have just experienced and rejected a manager very similar to Poyet and they are not ready for more. It will not work. <Gus is actually very different to PDC. We have heard anecdotal evidence that he had a close working relationship with the players at BHAFC, whereas PDC clearly didn't have the same at Sunderland. I think it's a very sloppy comparison to make, personally.>

If it is going to happen they had best do it at the start of the inernational break, at the latest by this Wednesday. Now is the perfect time and it would not make any sense to bring him in just a few days before they play Swansea.

I reckon if anything Sunderland are using Gus as a red herring to keep the media at bay whilst they negotiate with someone else and are treating their interests in mutual confidence?

It's only my personal opinion but they both have very large ego's both have been described as dictatorial, Poyet today on SSN. Read that Vicente said about their relationship.
While setting aside the stuff we don't know, the fact is after the second leg of the play off he talked about himself and his next step not the clubs next step.
