Johnny Byrne suggested on BBX SX Saturday that some of the players may still be in the Gus camp and taking time to come to terms with playing for a new manager. He said that when he was at QPR and Venables was replaced by Mullery there were a number of players who did not take to Mullery's appointment .

I found it interesting that he would say that on the airwaves. I would think he may have more of an inside track on what's going on than the man on the street. The majority of this squad came so close to something great last season, they could almost taste it. Then the circumstances in which it all came crashing down is bound to leave scars and a bit of finger pointing. This is why I thought in the summer that in the interests of the football club, some of Poyet's senior players needed to move on. But now we are a nearly a quarter of the way into the season and some cracks are appearing and need fixing fast, before the season slips away from us.

Which players do you think were loyal to Poyet? And you think these players are now deliberately sabotaging their own careers by playing worse for Oscar?

Let's go through Saturday's line up.

Kusz - back to his best
Calderon - nicest man on the planet and a real trier
Greer - skipper and ever present under Oscar
Upson - signed back up
Ward - new
Andrews - new
JFC - Given a chance under Oscar
Crofts - Oscar has turned him back in to a goal machine
Lua Lus - playing REALLY well
Buckley - *COUGH*
Barnes - *COUGH*

Just guessing mind....

Edit - I'm not for a minute suggesting those two are playing badly on purpose but that bad morale / lack of confidence may be affecting them on the pitch inadvertently.

He was talking generally about the fact that when managers move on, some are happy about it, others aren't. He mentioned when he was at QPR and Venables left and Mullery came in that some of the team missed Veneables and didn't give 100% for Mullery.

I think you could clearly pick a few players who were Gus signings that perhaps (and only perhaps) would be happier playing for him than Oscar.

Can't argue with that. Kazenga is perhaps an opposite, he probably felt he didn't get played enough under Gus and is now appreciating getting a run in the team.

I would also add Lopez *COUGH* to Buckley and Barnes.
And potentially Bridcutt, but impossible to tell yet obviously.

Good analysis, except Buckley has seemed to be quite happy in interviews I'd say.

As long as the 'want aways' don't include Ulloa and Orlandi then not too worried.

A fair reflection of what JB was saying, I think. He wasn't suggesting that players weren't trying, more that a change of manager does unsettle players, especially if they were happy under the previous regime.

Most of us must have been in similar positions in our own places of work. Takes time to get used to the new boss. Sometimes you end up liking them more and being more productive.

And margins are so very tight in the Championship that even being just 5% off your game can make a difference.

Which bearing in mind he had one of the longest tenures of any manager in the football league actually means KTR was wrong really.

I was wrong in the sense, the only reason Poyet didn't leave a year earlier was because just when clubs were starting to look at him as there future manager. We finished 11/12 season with a whimper taking 13 points from the last 13 games. Falling from a comfortable play off spot to just above mid table. The clubs who were looking at him then decided to hold back, given the form shown in the last quarter of the season, which was relegation form. This also was around the time his mouth stated running away with him and his actions started becoming very erratic. If we hadn't had such a bad end to that season Poyet would have been gone a year earlier.

This came from a coach at BHA. Kuszczak had problems adjusting to the Gus way of playing the ball from the back so perhaps he is having similar problems readjusting to the Oscar way.

How we played against Palace in Play off semi final was all do with the atmopshere in the club at the time. What happened that day or the days leading up to it, we will never know. That was definately not a Poyet team who played, they looked very negative, when I look back at it now. Why did Vicente not play, was that the supposed bust up? I'm sure palace where also missing Murray, this match should have been in the bag. The toilet thing was just a side show to much bigger things that where going on in my opinion. Our biggest match since Notts County, only for us do all the wheels come off at the same time. I wasn't angry that we lost, I felt mentally exhausted. Well it soon transpired in that interview afterwards, but I still think there is much much more to it.

I clearly remember thinking TK didn't know what to do at the start of this season. He didn't know whether to go long or short & looked shaky as a result. It appears to be on the mend now though.

I hope he does REALLY well, I have nothing but love for the guy.

What an amazing 3 years of football he delivered. I hope it proves the start of us always playing the beautiful game, bur I fear it will always be a purple patch I look back on very fondly.

A terrible shame that he and Tony couldn't get on for the good of what we had, but hey they couldn't, it happens. I don't suddenly hate (or even dislike) either of them for that.

Good luck Gus, and thanks for some truly GREAT times.

A mate of mine said he heard the same thing, but when I asked him how this came about in context he said JB was asked by JC if it and he said "it is possible" and gave an the QPR scenario as an example. Nothing more than hypothetical. When a team loses 1-3 with a killer penalty all of Greers own making, heads would drop.

[B..........]Then the circumstances in which it all came crashing down is bound to leave scars and a bit of finger pointing.........................

Only from finger pointing posters on here.

The players have acted with complete dignity in very difficult circumastances. "If" however they cannot handle working with different managers they shouldn't be in the game because seeing how other managers work is a good thing and teaches them more.

Excellent post.

There is a part of me that doesn't want him to do well though, not because I want Gus to fail personally but as I will always be wondering how far he could have taken us.
