The timing of the goals, and their succession does draw attention to the 'tactical substitution' that was made. It could have been any player put on, it's hard to direct blame at Guy Butters. Their goals from distance weren't really post-defence anyway - but maybe we should be taking the ball into the midfield and keeping it there (or forward of there) so we don't invite oppositions to come at us at all?

I don't think it is a co-incidence, but I don't think it's anything to do with management tactics either, more to do with (mainly) young, developing players making mistakes.

Correct, I think almost all goals this year have come from someones mistake, in some cases basic ones.

Regarding the merits of substitutions - Many have been drawing comparisans from football matches seen and jointly - that is a vast sum.

Just interested to find out if, as there are so many strong opinions out there are they based on knowledge gained via official coaching courses or from simply watching games. We're all entitled to opinions, especially about football. I haven't seen the goals personally so don't feel I can comment on why or whose fault etc.

So you were commenting more on people who held opinions on the game, specifically the goal conceded, rather than the tactical implications of bringing a sub on at a corner as a side issue?

Not really. I wasn't there so didn't comment on the goals. However I have played and watched football for the last 27 years so felt I was in a position to comment on the issue of timings of substitutions. Both linked issues but can also be discussed seperately.

So not that simple after all.

The problem appeared ('cos the view was shite) to be that Butters went into the middle - right where the guy headed from!

I knew you were talking shit when you posted this but I thought I'd better check the Meridian Tonight report to make sure - Butters was marking Sodje who made a run to the near post. The corner was flighted towards the back post, ie. Butters was nowhere near it.

I think the Meridian pictures are remarkable, I can't quite believe what I'm seeing in terms of how the ball got into the back of the net! Did a Southend player actually touch it, because it doesn't look to me as though Paynter got near it.
