Racism in Australia

Dandyman

This is what the Aussies had to say themselves:

"Last night Morris Iemma, the Labour premier of New South Wales, said police would hunt down those responsible for starting the riots, which authorities believe were encouraged by neo-Nazis.

"There appears to be an element of white supremacists, and they really have no place in mainstream Australian society. Those sort of characters are best placed in Berlin 1930s, not in Cronulla 2005, Carl Scully, the police minister, said." (The Guardian 12/12/05).

That is not to say that there may not be a problem with misogynistic attitudes from some muslim youngsters but it does seem to suggest that it is not just Poms who feel there is more than just locals involved.

Grip gained. What all good men and women have to be aware of are those who manipulate the situation to their own political ends. I am sure Stumpy is right that white supremacists are stirring it up. More integration, more understanding, more respect please.

Look at Northern Ireland to see what happens where communities are separated - and there is no difference in the colour of their skin.

Abolish faith schools. Draw up a bill of rights, and all who wish to live in a country need to subscribe to those rights.

And no excuse - but I think Ken was pissed, and pissed off at what he sees as provocation from a paper set out to discredit him.

It would be handy to blame it all on white supremacists - but there appeared to be a lot of people taking part.

I bet the Australian Tourist Board are not happy. Not the image of Sydney and Australia they want to see.

As for non-Euro peoples are segregated, vilified, criminalised, what a load of tosh! New immigrant cling together in communities, as they do in any new country, using words like that is inflammatory and ignorant.

Birds of a feather and all that, which kind of goes back to my original post. Ghettoism and racism are natural instincts borne from the innate desire to see "you and your kind" survive.

What's needed is society to be stronger than that desire and to make a real effort to encourage tolerance and understanding. That's what civilisation is about. The sooner governments, the media and people in the street realise that the better, whichever country you live in.

wise words from the lush.

I believe new migrants to any country should be encouraged to participate (assimilate, whatever u want to call it) in that countries society/culture, while retaining their own culture from their native country.

Where I believe multiculturalism has failed is letting new migrants alone and not bringing them into their new society and thus alienating them and causing resentment when they feel they are on the outside such as we've seen in France.

I can see first hand the 2nd and 3rd generations of post war migrants being as "Aussie" as the "Anglo's" and each thinking of themselves as Australian, which is the ideal form of Multiculturalism. A thriving cosmopolitan society form all nationalities.

Migrants that shut themselves off from a new countries society will inevitably lead to trouble down the track and work counter to the philosophy of Multiculturalism.

All IMHO of course...what a thriving topic...phew

maybe the simple answer to all of this is that human beings were never meant to live together. maybe we are kidding ourselves to think that people with differing views can live together in peace and harmony, especially where there are people out there, white, black, yellow etc etc who are quite happy to take someone's life because they have the wrong colour skin or worship the wrong diety

The point made about the attitude of middle eastern men to women is a very good one. My wife works in a school and she has experience of middle eastern children who have no respect for women whatsoever and when the parents are called in to discuss the issue, the fathers regard it as an affront to their beliefs that their sons behaviour is challenged.

There is no answer to this whilst independant culture exists. Trouble is the French tried the " all men are equal" stand and that has not worked either.

I just think we have to accept that people will kill each other as they have been doing for thousands of years.......

as lush pointed out - the ability to live together is civilisation. And I have met many people over the years from many backgrounds who have no respect for women. Or for authority come to that.

I worked with a lad from an indian background who had no respect for young white girls. The language he used was disgusting and I found it shocking. Was it a cultural thing ? I do not know.

What I do know is the same language and attitudes are displayed on NSP on the occasions I visit.

I have also found that when I speak to people from whatever background you can get along and gain a mutual understanding and respect.

There are exceptions - but this again is not generaly related to race.

More respect and more understanding is required.

Dave, with respect I live in a city of 8 million people from virtually every cultural and ethnic background in the world and the vast majority of us seem to rub along quite easily.

Have the Sun forgotten Oldham and Barnsley?? Violence has already broken out in Britain - years before Australia

also our violence manifested it in suicide bombers killing innocent people in London on 7/7 and then again trying a week later, as well as riots in Northern Cities and Towns

Not sure 7/7 and the riots in the north were quite the same thing there Dave. One was about skin colour the other was about religion, sure there is an overlap of the cultural issues but I don't think it is right to put the two together.

For three years I lived in an area of Bolton with a dense Asian population. Had no trouble what-so-ever.
