I lived in Portslade up until 6 months ago.
The best bits are the charity shops, the train station which enables you to get to Brighton in 10 minutes and the playground in Vale park is pretty good for the little one. The all you can eat chinese restaurant everyone mentions is also decent.
The worst bits are the pungent smell of KFC wafting down the street. Tesco, which has sucked the life out of street and is to this day the strangest Tesco I have ever shopped in. I can only liken it to the scene in the bar in Return of the Jedi. Also being asked to buy cigarettes/ Alcohol for 14 year olds most friday/Saturday nights gets tiresome after a while.
You get what you pay for though. It's is full of young families and commuters nowadays, it just seems that the high street hasn't quite caught up yet. Having said that five years ago I would never have dreamt you could dine Alfresco on Boundary Rd. So miracles can happen!
