Portslade: What's it all about?

I lived in Portslade up until 6 months ago.
The best bits are the charity shops, the train station which enables you to get to Brighton in 10 minutes and the playground in Vale park is pretty good for the little one. The all you can eat chinese restaurant everyone mentions is also decent.
The worst bits are the pungent smell of KFC wafting down the street. Tesco, which has sucked the life out of street and is to this day the strangest Tesco I have ever shopped in. I can only liken it to the scene in the bar in Return of the Jedi. Also being asked to buy cigarettes/ Alcohol for 14 year olds most friday/Saturday nights gets tiresome after a while.
You get what you pay for though. It's is full of young families and commuters nowadays, it just seems that the high street hasn't quite caught up yet. Having said that five years ago I would never have dreamt you could dine Alfresco on Boundary Rd. So miracles can happen!

Most people are referring to Lower Portslade.. Upper Portslade is a different planet to it's 'south of the Old Shoreham Road' neighbour, and most who have lived therein find it a very pleasant village indeed

I can remember that being built. When I went to Benfield me and a couple of mates used to gob on people below from the top floor of the car park!

Why does everyone think St Marys is good? It's a VERY average Catholic school and unless you're a Tim or at least Christened you won't get in. St Peter's is a very good school, Peter Gladwyn is a very good school, Portslade Infants is OK and Benfield's dreadful. And before you move to Portslade with kids or breed here think on this. There are nowhere near enough school places available for the kids that live here already and the Greens just wasted the money to change this on a biosphere and a food waste pilot.

That's odd, my kids both went to Portslade and now go to Benfield, and one of their friends Mum is a school inspector in West Sussex, and Dad is a head teacher at secondary level and both rate each school highly and doing very well. I've also been really pleased. But clearly you are an expert on all the schools in the area...

So I'm moving from Preston Park to PORTSLADE (bit more space for the dog etc.) and I need some local advice.

What hidden gems are there in this up-and-coming goldmine of a community? I'm particularly interested in pubs, takeaways, places to walk the pooch, butchers & greengrocers.

I know THE STANLEY.

Gracias

Not a bad pub do some nice ale, saw a right dodgy band there one night. Archie Deakon & the Bishops. :guitar:

Surprised no-one has mentioned Victoria Rd?
If you live within 20 miles this is the place to buy a new or decent second hand car! Not much change from £10,000 here.

Porsche, VW, Volvo, Chanlers, Mazda, Mercs & more.
This is the place to window shop or buy.

Just along the road is Portslade Town Hall.
A building I have been in many times.....but only to give blood!
It's so retro. Sure it hasn't changed since the war!

Victoria Park : Where the ex England cricket manager Peter Moores & his brother used to play in the same Portslsde U19s as yours truly

WSU, just below the seagull.
I'd forgotten about Morris, he used to drink in the Battle a lot as well. A friend of mine once did "Baby, I Love You" on the kareoke there and dedicated it to him.

The Morris you are speaking of, is he the one that acted a little bit more than camp, that could be seen on the bench outside the Natwest bank at 9am on a Saturday morning with his 4 cans of Norseman lager bought from Tesco?

Update: 2 weeks into SladeLife

People are lovely - after years of speaking to a handful of people in nearby flats we've already met all the neighbours.
Stanley is brilliant, as expected.
It's quicker for me to get onto the A23 from Slade than Preston Park, so my commute is reduced.
The DOG loves a) having a garden to call her own and b) walks up Mile Oak Farm & Southwick Hill.
Tesco's Holmbush is larger and emptier than Asda Hollingbury, so shopping = more bearable.

Overall it's just perfect for me. Thanks all for the comments & advice.

Think a large portion of my family use the Battle as their local...Think my sisters husband is manager of the football team there

Sorry TD - bit of a sore point with me as I have spent the last twenty years explaining to various people that one side of the road is Portslade (Station Road) & the other is Hove (Boundary Road) and over the railway line the road turns into Carlton Terrace!!

Those 20 years must have just flown by! Seriously, you need to get out more.

As a Portslade old boy, I've never got over driving back through the place and seeing Sports Corner has gone.

Just one problem. You, your dog and the Missus live in Fishersgate. You could be had for time wasting. The Stanley is Fishersgate, isnt it?
