I saw my surname number plate for sale at the time it was first issued. It was at £1,750. I happen to remember my surname, and consider cherished plates somewhat daft. So I didn’t buy it. Later saw it resold at £25,000. Oh well!

Is that still the case? I thought that was back in the day before number plates became AANNAAA??
I was told that GU were leased cars??
The 'G' stands for 'Garden of England' – ie. Kent and Sussex (or Maidstone and Brighton) and the second letter is designated to one or the other. In the case of 'U', it's Brighton.

I've actually bored myself with all that, but if you want to know more, go here!

I don't know why they are called personalised plates when every single one says the same thing - 'wanker'.
Not every single one

I feel the same about balding men with pony tails as most on here feel about people with personalised plates :lolol:

Oh and neck and face tattoos!

I bought mine within minutes of the plate with my surname going on sale at DVLA, for rather less than that (probably a rarer surname). I had been warned that if I didn’t, it would most likely be bought by a ”broker” who would try to sell if for that sort of silly amount

Oooh, I have X6 followed by my 3 letter surname, am I a knob?
Not at all - I think they are a bit of fun.
And you can spend your money on whatever you like IMHO

There are some people who will happily spend £10,000 on a second hand watch. Yes, really - they do!

Like I said, everyone should feel free to spend their money on whatever floats their boat. Personalised plates don't do anyone any harm and some of them make me smile, like one local to me OBO110X.

Sorry, but ... EN was the suffix for Bury, where I went to school. We were all waiting for that particular reg, but it was never issued for obvious reasons. On the other hand there was a pale blue Vauxhall Victor near us with GEN 1E
Don't be sorry, my memory let me down.

It was PEN15 (5 not S) and was owned by Steve Parrish who also raced bikes around the same time I did (late 70's early 80's).
He lived in Royston at the time but could have bought the original vehicle or plate from someone in Bury, I guess ....
The "S" reg plates came out in Aug-77, so was of a similar time.
I knew I'd heard the story but I'd obviously got my facts a tad misaligned - my mistake ....

Yep. I quite like it when driving to away games, as it helps you spot fellow Albion cars on the road. If you're driving up the A1M in North Yorkshire to an Albion game and you pass a car with the GU, GV, GY or GX prefix, there's a good chance it's one of our own heading in the same direction as you.

I struggle to give a toss about private plates either way.

Some work really well on certain cars, others look totally contrived but, ultimately, if people want to add something a bit different to their car (it doesn't always have to be done by 'look at me' type wankers).
That's exactly my view. I'd never have one myself but I wouldn't have believed that some people could get so worked up about them until I read this thread. Very very odd.

As an aside anyone remember the landlord of The Bridge in Shoreham in the mid-80s? His name was Ron and he was a proper old-school character. He used to drive around in a white Rolls Royce with the personalised plate RON 1. He hadn't brought it of course, he'd just had it made up as he thought it would look good and be a bit of a laugh - which it was. (He only did it for show, most of the time it had its real plates on).
