how does this compare to a few seasons ago

Last season saw 107 penalties awarded, 38 games were decided by those penalties which is exactly 10% of games

The 2022-23 season saw 99 penalties awarded, 36 games would have seen the results change if those penalties hadn't been given. Just about 9.5% of games.

So at the moment this season is trending slightly downwards at just over the half way stage compared to the previous 2 seasons.

Of course it's a foul. Otherwise it would imply that it's fine to head-butt an opponent, no free-kick will be awarded, and it'll become a legitimate way of gaining an advantage in aerial challenges. It's a binary thing: either one can head-butt an opponent when challenging for the ball, or one can't. (As others have pointed out, there is a difference between headbutting and a mutual clash of heads.)

I really don’t understand what the fuss is about Pedro won the header after which he was moving towards the travel of the ball the defender head butted Pedro I have looked at the footage a number of times and I cannot clearly see that the defender touched the ball after Pedro therefore it’s a penalty.
In fact had he done the same in the street it could have been seen as GBH and he might well be facing a prosecution
MOTD had to watch it several times from 4 different angles is slow mo to manage to see a miniscule touch by the defenders hair

Tweet (or whatever they’re called these days) from an Arsenal fan clearly not happy with Taylor’s decision to award us a pen. Pretty disgusting comment really. That’s Arsenal for you.

Both because the fans get wound up by their teams' manager into believing they have suffered a great injustice.

On the Premier League coverage - Glenn Murray and Dermot O Gallagher were very certain it was a pen. Ian Wright less so but more because “refs are inconsistent “ rather than idea it wasn’t a foul.
I think all the segment did was highlight Ian Wright's bias. He didn't want the penalty against Arsenal given as the one in the Spurs game wasn't given. When the others point out they were both penalties, instead of having the opinion that the spurs one was wrong...he just wants them both to be wrong for the sake of consistency.

i was surprised the Match of the day pundits all thought that headbutting in the penalty area was perfectly legal, and just a coming together. If that were the criteria 50% or more of penalties would not be given. They frequently use the -he felt contact and was entitled to go down- or he got the ball but took the player out with the follow through argument when a defender slightly mistimes a tackle-to justify penalties given for bugger all, yet a full on headbutt is fine because its arsenal?
They also thought there was nothing wrong with the Newcastle goal when Joelinton handled the ball. It may have been accidental but it directly assisted a goal so how can that be ok?

I do think that the roma incident had impacted Taylor's performances. He was a confident and calm ref with clear decision making. We should all remember how his prompt action contributed to Erkisen's life chances in the 2021 euros

But since this Roma incident he seems more easily rattled and more irrational in how he handles being crowded.

He needs counselling if he hasn't had it already.

Because they changed the handball rule a few seasons ago. Now the goal is only disallowed if the accidental handball is by the goal scorer. If the accidental handball happens in the build up the goal will stand.

Just caught Ref Watch on SSN and they backed the penalty call. Viewers poll fairly evenly split with just over half agreeing with the ref's decision.
I really don't understand the huge debate. It's as simple as if it happened anywhere on the pitch it's a foul and the fact that it's his head is a complete irrelevance. Glad Ref Watch came to the correct conclusion although they made hard work of it.

When Jay Bothroyd and Clinton Morrison were on Sky yesterday declaring it wasn't a penalty it was excruciating not only for the opinion but the " geezer down the pub " delivery.
