Listened to some of the Talk Sport "debate" on this and it's the usual levels of deflection:

"Are you saying that was a headbutt??!!"
"every other clash of heads is a dropball"
"What about all the pulling at corners, why aren't they penalties?"
"It wasn't deliberate"
"Saliba got the ball"
" 2 players contesting the ball"

MotD presenting how they think the rules should be interpreted, rather than how the rules are interpreted has muddied the waters significantly/
I don't disagree with the sentiment, but all the time, soft penalties are being given for minor touches during slightly mistimed challenges, this one will be given.

Last week João Pedro gave away a penalty catching a player’s foot as he cleared despite making contact with the ball. This week t was heads not feet. Why is that different?
Came to this thread to make this exact comment.

The penalty given (by VAR) against Joao Pedro at Villa, is in essence exactly the same as the Saliba one. In both cases the circumstances are near identical: both players make a genuine attempt at the ball, the attacking player gets there first and moves the ball, the defending player gets there a fraction late and catches him. Both penalties.

The only difference - and where we could possibly feel aggrieved - is that the latter one was given on the field and correctly stays a pen. The Villa one was waved away by the on field ref, and there is definitely an argument that it was not clear-cut enough for the VAR to get involved.

Ummm what? The penalty in that video is 100% a penalty every day whereas the penalty this weekend has a 12 page long discussion. Don't see how its all that comparable.

My view is that the entirely accidental and fortunate touch on the ball by the arsenal player is why VAR didn't recommend it be looked at as a potential red card.

Only because a lot of people don't understand the laws of the game.

Only because a lot of people don't understand the laws of the game.
That is one reason and inevitable bias is the other, as with most discussions about refs and their decisions.

Because if this weekend's penalty was given to Arsenal, there'd be no discussion. Against them and it's a different matter.

Maybe soft.. But oh well. Do you think Arsenal have had a few soft penalties this year? Of course they bloody have!
Not to mention the pen Lamptey gave away last season which was identical but with feet instead.

Jesus is in control of the ball, tries to go around Lamptey who makes contact with the ball but isn't in control of it before following through on Jesus, pen is given and not overturned by VAR. Timestamped below

In this circumstance, Pedro is in control of the ball, flicks it with his head and Saliba makes contact with the ball but isn't in control of it and follows through on Pedro. Pen is given and not overturned by VAR.

Same circumstances with different parts of the body, but the first drew no criticism.

Watched Ref Watch this morning…according to all their pundits & ex Ref Dermot Gallagher - it was correctly awarded. The ball wasn’t hit first by Saliba …the contact he had with the ball was after it had first come off Pedro’s head & came into contact with his head & then the follow through foul on Joao. Every time I see it you can see it is most definitely a penalty.

Saliba should have been given a red card for violent conduct.

There would be and most people in here wouldn't think its a pen because thats how it is most times.

Not in the media there wouldn't.

There was a poll for the penalty given for Arsenal (where Lamptey clipped the ball before colliding with opposition), where most people here thought it was a penalty.

A lot of the media here think that a penalty this time was the correct call.

It is absolutely a penalty. It isn't a "clash of heads" as the forward momentum is by Saliba only.

It's the same as a high stud challenge, even if they get the ball or not it's reckless. You can't come flying in with your head in hopes you get the ball, irrelevant if it comes off his head or not.
