Saw a post online about the next host of MotD and it prompted me to check something I thought was interesting (although no-one else might!). None of the previous full-time hosts support "traditional" big clubs.
  • Kenneth Wolstenholme: Bolton Wanderers
  • David Coleman: Wolverhampton Wanderers
  • Jimmy Hill: Fulham and Coventry City, weirdly
  • Des Lynam: Brighton & Hove Albion
  • Gary Lineker: Leicester City
Given that pundits are invariably supporters or players of those clubs, it's be good to have a presenter who keeps the flag flying for the less fashionable teams.
David Coleman presented MOTD in the 60's. In the late 50's Wolves won the First Div title two or three times, and the FA Cup, and reached the UEFA Cup Final during the years he was on.

I'd say they were a 'traditional big club' at the time.

He hosted them between 1967 and 1973, so a good ten years after their last title win and, during that interim period, they were in between Division 1 and 2. The biggest clubs, success-wise during that period were Liverpool (by some margin), Manchester and Everton.

So although they're undoubtedly a big team, they were well on the wane from their glory years and in Div. 2 when he started hosting

Jeff Stelling or Manish Bhasin would be my pick. Keep Chapman on MOTD2 and the radio. He's brilliant anchoring the commentaries and hosting Monday Night Club

I think Chappers deserves to move across to Saturday nights. Personally think Muzza would be a good host of MOTD2. You can see the BBC going with Alex Scott which I wouldn’t be against.

I haven't read the whole thread so don't know if she's been mentioned - but I'd go for Michelle Owen

Not sure why you find Jimmy Hill's teams weird, played for Fulham, managed Coventry. OK two clubs but then Ian Wright supports both Palace and Arsenal.

I've spent far too long thinking about this. But why does it have to be a sports person or even a sports presenter. Why not go with just someone who is a very good presenter in their right.
Dermot O'Leary.
Ant and/or Dec.
Holly Willoughby
or an actor..
David Tennant
Tom Hanks
Michael Caine
The pundits are there for the football chat.
