But Gary was the longest presenter of MOTD in its history. A great loss. Before Lineker did any of the presenters, bar Jimmy Hill?

Dion Dublin or Alan Smith.... articulate, knowledgeable and both have personalities that will be a fit with the guests each weekend.Lineker was (is) a great presenter. I'm not sure who else the BBC could have turned to who would've replaced all of the attributes he has that you list though.
When Lineker started he was not great. Cates is always excellent. Not sold on Logan. Chapman is a brilliant presenter and during motd2 he usually offered better observations than the pundits!I'm not saying you have to have played at the top level to be a good presenter of MOTD, what I'm saying is Lineker had all of the attributes of a good presenter AND his football pedigree was second to none, which helps you when you are interviewing and sharing a studio with top level professional footballers and coaches.
I think people are deluded if they think Yorath will be a match for Lineker, or Cates for that matter. They're all good, but not elite. The BBC have played it safe, and have avoided dropping a complete bollock like when they gave QoS to Paddy McGuinness.
It would be fun to get Barton along as a presenter…just to see him make himself look a bit thick like he did on Question Time.Joey Barton / Micah Richards / Keown etc all played at the top level
You can watch these on YouTube.Don't need any presenters at all. Just show more highlights.
It still pulls in around 4m viewers. Which considering the highlights are available these days on various platforms soon after the game has ended, thats not too shabby.I genuinely didn’t realise people still watched MotD.
Then that's a good case for scrapping motd. We can all watch the highlights on YouTube. You can watch these on YouTube.
Lineker was a great presenter (after a shaky start) and became a real personality. I liked him alot. but 26 years in the game is alot, Des didn't last that long.Well I think this is a sad day. Lineker played at the highest level, he is a genuine England legend, he worked with some great coaches. He is humorous and intelligent. These three are excellent presenters but they did not play football at Gary's levels so do not have the same voice of authority to challenge the pundits, players and managers. I will still watch the show, but undeniably something has been lost.
You stick to YouTube, I like the analysis. Then that's a good case for scrapping motd. We can all watch the highlights on YouTube.
Speak for yourself. I like settling back for an hour and a half of the highlights, the interviews and the analysis on MOTD as they go over the talking points. Da Kidz who just want to half-watch the goals and nuffin else, while they doomscroll on their phones, can all flock to YouTube or whatever. Leave us crusties with our staple traditions. Then that's a good case for scrapping motd. We can all watch the highlights on YouTube.
He’s rubbish. Stupid tattoos as wellJoe Hart
I don't think choosing three really good presenters for your most trusted brand is playing it safe - it's putting it in the right hands.I'm not saying you have to have played at the top level to be a good presenter of MOTD, what I'm saying is Lineker had all of the attributes of a good presenter AND his football pedigree was second to none, which helps you when you are interviewing and sharing a studio with top level professional footballers and coaches.

It all depends what direction the show wishes to go in. One of Lineker's reasons for leaving the gig is that the highlights package contract is changing in a year's time and BBC want to change things around.I don't think choosing three really good presenters for your most trusted brand is playing it safe - it's putting it in the right hands.
Who would you have chosen? The only other main candidate in the same level would be Pougatch and he's got the lead anchor role at ITV.
Possibly Ade Odalipo who does the boxing and is excellent, but again I doubt he would give that up, especially as there are loads of big fights now.
