What a strange negative spin that is. It’s not anti-woke, I hate the term, ‘Woke’, it’s going for the best there is as you said and not squeezing in someone to suit a narrative which has gone too far and one which for me has really f***ed the left side of politics currently.

Im delighted, at the choices.
I hate that term too, but people (a lot of whom can't actually define it) LOVE to trot it out at every opportunity. These people are, by definition, anti-woke. Mainly because they say they are :lolol:

Well I think this is a sad day. Lineker played at the highest level, he is a genuine England legend, he worked with some great coaches. He is humorous and intelligent. These three are excellent presenters but they did not play football at Gary's levels so do not have the same voice of authority to challenge the pundits, players and managers. I will still watch the show, but undeniably something has been lost.

Before Lineker did any of the presenters, bar Jimmy Hill?

Lineker was (is) a great presenter. I'm not sure who else the BBC could have turned to who would've replaced all of the attributes he has that you list though.

No:

*Ray Stubbs 1993–2009
Des Lynam 1988–1999
*David Icke 1982–1985
Bob Wilson 1976–1994
Jimmy Hill 1973–1988
David Coleman 1967–1973
*Frank Bough 1965–1972
Kenneth Wolstenholme 1964–1967

(Edit: apart from the fantastic Bob Wilson!)

when did Lineker ever challange the pundits? gave a humourous intro, some obvious feed lines for the punditry. always thought was a bit of a waste really, only really got his view in international tournements where they had time to fill.

David Icke? I believe he was on the books of Coventry City. And Jimmy Hill was hardly a player at the 'highest level'. You really don't need to have been a top footballer to be able to present a football show.

Anyway I'm happy with those choices.

EDIT: Aggh! Just seen the list in post #186. How could I forget Bob Wilson?

Well, Jimmy Hill did a lot for footballers as well as being a reasonable forward, Icke was a Wally but you can hardly say that Bob Wilson was a footballing nobody, after all “What more does a boy want in a pair of shoes?”

Very true. Sorry Bob! He was legendary on Football Focus, too.

Are you telling me that Des Lynam was a top level footballer. That is some news to me. I remember him as being the guy on the TV in the 80s presenting grandstand. I guess he was a baller before that.

Think it's good they are rotating it and MoTD2 as well. Mark Chapman is an excellent presenter.

Joey Barton / Micah Richards / Keown etc all played at the top level

I'm not saying you have to have played at the top level to be a good presenter of MOTD, what I'm saying is Lineker had all of the attributes of a good presenter AND his football pedigree was second to none, which helps you when you are interviewing and sharing a studio with top level professional footballers and coaches.

I think people are deluded if they think Yorath will be a match for Lineker, or Cates for that matter. They're all good, but not elite. The BBC have played it safe, and have avoided dropping a complete bollock like when they gave QoS to Paddy McGuinness.

The thing is, it appears extremely hard to find somebody who fits those attributes. Lineker is rare in that he managed to suppress his outspoken nature off-screen and was as close to a neutral pundit as you could get due to his love for Leicester (aka a non glory hunter team) which only added to his personality and wasn't to his detriment. It was as unthreatening as Glenn's connections to Albion, Jeff Stelling's love of the Chimpchokers and Jason Muhammed's love for Cardiff. Your Keowns, Nevilles etc are just painfully biased to ever be considered for the job.

In light of that, I'd rather take the intelligent and unbiased quality traits of Chappers and Logan and accept the lack of footballing pedigree. Can't speak for the other one as can't actually recall whether I've seen much of her before.
