I think that is a wise move, cans of beans, pasta maybe some flour and milk ( to put in freezer) , The Great British Public WILL panic in the same way the Chinese public did that is for sure. I always remember long ago going to the big Co-Op ( now Morrison's)by Worthing station straight after work to get a couple of tins of Cat food and some milk and the place had been stripped of several things, there was no milk, fruit and veg or frozen chips and veg because earlier in the day a weather report said a Big Freeze was due which could last 10days !

I'm not sure the correct response to the potential for panic buying is to panic buy.

I have a friend, a staunch remainer, who has a cupboard full of unwanted cans of basic crappy food because she panic bought thinking no deal Brexit would happen at the end of October. Cans she no longer needs and that cannot now be bought by people on a budget or donated to food banks.

And that's really my entire point. The current response of some people IN BRITAIN at THIS TIME is entirely disproportionate. Panic buying will disadvantage anyone who is unable to get to the shops. Calling off sporting events at the drop of a hat will worry children and those of a nervous disposition who may be attending them this weekend. Sending the stock market off a cliff could have reprocussions that will last for a decade and lead to more austerity that could kill hundreds of thousands. All for a disease with a 1-2% mortality rate.

But we are not talking about a couple of days of coughing. We are talking about those who contract the virus having a 1/4 - 1/5 chance of requiring hospitalization.

ok, this is not actually correct. the reaction in China to "severe" symptoms was to take this action. its not necessarily the required action, there will be mild pneumonia case in that number which would not normally be treated in hospital. and a large number that are mis-diagnosed too.

Only a matter of time before some shit UK town puts two and two together, fails to reach a coronavirus conclusion and starts clearing the shelves of Iceland anyways. My money's on Pompey

I'm not overly worried though I do have a minor heart condition, which is a bit of a concern. But I'm young and asymptomatic which goes in my favour.

I'm trying not to be too cavalier about the whole thing, it is absolutely a bad thing which could become a very bad thing, but right now the panic levels are a bit OTT for me.

its not uniform distribution either: seems the elderly and ill are more like to be struck down, despite early information. in grands scheme of things, the impact may be little different to normal mortality rates with a different cause recorded.

Just had to write off £500 for flights, but managed to get most of the money back for a holiday into the Costa Adeja death zone.

Not bothered for myself, but taking the youngster there was unthinkable. So that cash is now for later in the year.

I'm also wondering if tomorrow will be the last game at the Amex we get to see for a while...

I'm beginning to wonder the same thing.
Northern Italy Serie A fixture are being played behind closed doors.
Switzerland have banned any gatherings of more than a thousand people, cancelling the Geneva Motor Show because of that rule.
Italy's rugby fixture in Dublin has been cancelled.

I'll have a guess that our game against Arsenal will be our last home game of the season in front of a crowd.

You are probably right. The run in could well be behind closed doors.

I see that one of the people quarantined on the diamond princess ( uk guy) has died...that makes 7.

Lawyer on the radio this morning intimated that Princess could be subject to a major law suit due to the perceived quarantine methods which proved wholly inadequate.

This could have a hell of a knock on effect for cruising as we have been on a ship that someone had norovirus and the whole family was locked in their. Cabin for 4 days of a 7 day cruise and the virus spread like wildfire through the ship explained to us by the air con systems that they use! The Boudicca , which they renamed was known as the “ plague ship” as it kept getting hit by sickness bugs.

Only thing we know for certain is that JP Morgan and the like will be making money hand over fist, no matter which way the stock market turns. ****s

This has exposed Trump's claims about how well the stock market has done under his 'leadership'. He has no more control over it than anybody else.

If it keeps tanking or causes a recession it could snooker his chances of re-election - he has always used its performance as one of his main campaigning points

It's ok everyone Boris Johnson has called an emergency COBRA meeting to discuss it.

I fear he may have misunderstood what this means...

Brighton factually.....
The games would be played behind closed doors, maybe televised.

Which does not make sense, fans cant watch, but players must mix with other players from other parts of country, including travelling and mixing with workers at the stadium etc etc.... I could see the PFA getting involved.

I'm not suggesting panic buying, just a few extra bits in case there are supply problems. Your friend " who has a cupboard full of unwanted cans of basic crappy food " could still eat them or donate to a food bank. You go back a few years and people always had a few extra things such as half a pound of butter or a bag of sugar stashed away. When you see people with 28 pints of milk and 10 loaves of bread in their trolley then you know society is finished.
