These kind of arguments are bizarre to me.

There aren't any cases in the UK.

There are only x cases in the UK.

There are only xx cases in the UK.

There are only xxx cases in the UK.

Oh.

Well it'll need to get to xxx before anyone pops their clogs statistically. Meanwhile no one with seasonal flu is self isolating and half the country is under water.....

i just ask the question, what action do you think the governments could/should be doing?

Honestly I think all international travel should (have) be(en) severely restricted. Dealing with an outbreak is hard enough, without pretty much garaunteeing that you could have new cases arriving everyday. The entire response has been reactive, we are chasing this thing down which is kind of useless, we should have been getting out infront of it.

Yes there would have been a cost, short term. I think we will end up paying that price anyway, and for no ultimate benefit.

A few weeks back, there were no cases in the UK. In a few weeks time, there will be more than 15 cases. IMO, it is highly likely that Covid-19 will kill more people in the UK than the flooding. I hope I'm wrong (obviously also not wanting deaths from flooding).

And how many more will it kill than car accidents, alcoholism, seasonal flu, AIDS, cancer, diabetis etc etc.

Massively stupid panic. Viruses do not want to kill anyone because that kills the virus. Build up immunity and work on a vaccine. Simple.

Let it spread a bit, develop some herd immunity, watch it disappear in the summer and have a vaccine ready for the next winter flu season. People are acting like old people with respiritory problems aren't one step from death anyway.
It's not just old people with respiratory problems, it's anyone over about 70. That's a fair number of people on this board, and many of our parents etc - people who hopefully have many good years left.

And how much time, effort and money has been spent fighting cancer etc? Hopefully the worldwide efforts will prove enough to stop millions dying, but if they don't put in the effort then it's certain that many millions will die.

Viruses do not want to kill anyone because that kills the virus.
That's incorrect. That's like saying the black death virus didn't want to kill anyone

This. The levels of media and corporate hysteria are getting more ludicrous by the day. They're talking things up into a global recession. Meanwhile, ordinary people just go about their ordinary everyday lives, rightly suspecting there's just so much BS being spouted. One good thing to come out of this is an increased awareness of the importance of personal hygiene in public places, which can only be a good thing

another good thing is Szuachuan city is going to ban the eating of cats and dogs so i read(GOOD!), its a start.

What because 15 people in the UK have a new type of cold? Ok then.

I have some sympathy with people who think the seriousness of this is being overstated, although I don't agree. But calling it "a cold" and suggesting it does not matter is irresponsible IMO.

The Journal of the American Medical Association:

Coronavirus Infections—More Than Just the Common Cold.

"Human coronaviruses (HCoVs) have long been considered inconsequential pathogens, causing the “common cold” in otherwise healthy people. However, in the 21st century, 2 highly pathogenic HCoVs—severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV)—emerged from animal reservoirs to cause global epidemics with alarming morbidity and mortality. In December 2019, yet another pathogenic HCoV, 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), was recognized in Wuhan, China, and has caused serious illness and death. The ultimate scope and effect of this outbreak is unclear at present as the situation is rapidly evolving."

It is striking young as well, a 23 year old woman died in Qom the other day, Iran.

Actually, I think the plague is still around.

https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/...nly-old-time-disease-still-lurking/435142001/

But regardless whether it is or not, that's not the point. You said "Viruses do not want to kill anyone because that kills the virus." That is wrong. Viruses do not make an attempt not to kill people, in order that they may survive. That's not how it works.

So should everyone who returns from Mexico and Brazil self isolate? Maybe ban them from conferences and sporting events? "Black Death" and "Yellow Fever" sound much worse than corona virus. Or maybe they kill people faster than people can spread them, thus proving my point.
