Anything that reduces traffic congestion in the city centre makes Brighton a more attractive place to visit. The excellent PlusBus ticket - available from any station in the country - that encourages visitors to arrive by train and get access to the whole of the local bus network (Brighton, Lewes, Newhaven, Seaford, Hove, Shoreham and Steyning) for just £2 a day (£1.35 for railcard holders / £1 for children) is doing the business. Better bus services will enhance the product.

These prices sound impressive, but as i understand it costs £4 return to the town centre from anywhere in Brighton.(Daughter paying this each day to go to Varndean college)
These prices sound s like its cheaper for those outside Brighton?
Where can you get a return for £2? this would save me £10 a week!

Not in all cases. Not when you just want to pop into town for a couple of hours from out of town. It is lost business. We will go for a walk and visit Worthing.
I work in Brighton, I usually use public transport for my journey - even though I have free workplace parking. When I "pop into town for a couple of hours" (eg at weekends) I always use public transport. It's cheaper. It's quicker. And there are NO parking hassles.

£4.40 in April. You can get a monthly ticket for £58 which is surely a better option for your daughter?

If your daughter is under 19, she needs to be using a busID pass.

They are free and will allow her to buy a 1 day CitySAVER for £2.20 (from bus driver), a 1 week SAVER for £10 (from bus driver) or £8 (from the B&H Buses website or from 1 Stop Travel), or a 3 month SAVER £80 (from the website or from 1 Stop Travel). There are also cheap deals for evening, weekend and holiday journeys.

The CitySAVER will let her travel anywhere within the area bounded by Steyning, Shoreham, Patcham, Lewes (Malling Down) and Seaford. The SAVER lets her travel as far as Tunbridge Wells or Eastbourne.

Yep. I went to a meeting at the Amex on Monday, where the Council unveiled plans for a vastly improved bus service along the Lewes Road. Increased capacity on the 25s, new services direct to Brighton Station, new buses, more frequent services, many new bus shelters in Coldean, Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, bus lanes in both directions to speed up journey times, real time information signs at more bus stops, re-design of traffic signals and junctions (including the Vogue Gyratory), wider cycle lanes, new off-road cycle routes, better pedestrian crossings.

They've started work already, but it will be two years before the project is finished.

Oh good - the Go-Ahead Group get to make yet more profit from public money.

She is under 19 but not sure if she know about "busid", will investigate.

Interested on the eariier point that "tourists" can get £2 bus tickets where as residents have to pay £4. surely thats not right?

What about family deals? thinking of the family day at the seaside where a family of 4 come to the town for a weekend. is it cheaper for them, this i assume is a target market? or is mainly aimed at students.

And the appalling cost of traffic congestion (which affects loads of businesses) is reduced. "Public Spending Delivers Benefits Scandal". Shocking.

I think it has the opposite effect though. The harder the council make it for me to get my car into town by making more and more bus and cycle lanes or increasing parking charges, the less I spend in town. Instead I use out of town shopping places or the internet.

It is April. 7pm. It is neither peak time during the day, nor peak time during the year. There are acres of car spaces. There are no parking hassles other than the price they choose to charge.

And trust me - it is quicker to drive from Steyning than catch the bus.

Most of the family deals are (like PlusBus) railway promotions. Have a look at the posters at out-of-town railway stations. Or on the Southern website.

Less congestion, but more money going into the fat cats as opposed to small businesses, I guess.

Somebody must be using the bus - otherwise they wouldn't be running them to Steyning after midnight.

Anyone can buy a £2 network ticket from a bus driver at Brighton Station. They sell them at that price at the station because it brings in revenue.

So a resident has to spend £2 single to the station to get one ???
Think a fairer system would if the were available to all tourists & residents alike.
Why can't they be bought from the bus driver at every stop?

To be fair and brutily honest I'm interested in how Brighton residents are being looked after rather than those coming into the town. I've not used a train is years so do not visit out of town train stations.

I sometimes use them myself. They are a real asset. But if I want to pop into town I do not have the two hours each way you need to allow. I understand peak time charges - but 7pm midweek in April is not peak time. It may not make any odds to to the City - but it does not seem to make a lot of sense.

Seeing the thousands of visitors streaming into Brighton on a sunny day to go and sit on the beach, I appreciate that many will spend money in the city, however many won't. Yet presumably there's a massive cost involved in clearing up the beach/streets afterwards. Who pays this?
