I'm considering Primavera 2014 with all the family. We're all off to the boys' first ever concert tomorrow night though - Vampire Weekend and Noah and the Whale at the O2. The boys are 7, 8 and 10. They don't know yet, and, like the sentimental old dad I am, I can't wait to see the look on their faces when I tell them tomorrow evening exactly where we're going - they think it's just a trip to London. My first ever was Reading Rock Festival 1982, aged 12. I was dumbfounded.

I have a ticket for Julia Holter which I will give away, I have had some bad news and can't face it. Free to a good home.

Julia Holter tonight, those who have been following this thread will know I've been looking forward to this one for ages, I shall report back some thoughts tomrorow. I just hope the crowd is repsctful, as I'd imagine if there is a load of chatter it is going to kill it. Is anyone going to Future of The Left tonight? If so, let me know what you think..

Going to Julia Holter and checked stage times- she is on at 9.00 according to Komedia. Means the FOTL is now out of the question as that is when they are on too. How selfish! Hoping too for a quiet and respectful audience. I think we will get it somehow. Better get ready I guess!

Primavera is the best festival by a million miles and one of the best weekends to be had anywhere in the world. That said, your boys are way too young at the moment. Unlike British festivals it doesn't kick off till about 6pm. All the headliners (though they have a different system there that means headliner doesn't mean last) come on between 12am and 3am (or later). The big stuff is generally done by about 3 or 4am, but to me trying to stay up even till 2am with kids that age 3 nights in a row sounds crazy. Not to mention the fact that Primavera isn't exactly a 'kids' festival. It's an amazing atmosphere but kids certainly aren't 'welcomed' in the way you'd expect at places like Glastonbury or Green Man.

My brother went to Camp Bestival @ 10 years old, it's an excellent bridge between kid friendly stuff and a proper festival

Sound advice. Thank you Spider. I will abandon my planned research for this evening. SHC: love the idea of Camp Bestival, but the music on offer is usually not quite good enough - usually only about one band that anyone in the family wants to see. May try for a Latitude, or something similar. Benecassim (not sure of the spelling) had the best line up I could find last year, but may also be subject to late Spanish hours.

Latitude would be a winner as would Spiders suggestion of Green Man. End of the Road is worth a look as well.

I'd echo that... doesn't really start till 7pm and I think they kick people out at around 6-7am. When I was there they still had some top acts coming on at around 4am. Can't remember many kids being there - you'd be better off taking them to Camp Bestival, as mentioned above. Alternatively, Latitude has an excellent kids area and activities, as does Glastonbury (which would certainly blow their minds!). Or go to a smaller one in a nice location such as Green Man or End of the Road.

Another thing to point out about Primavera is that the main event is hosted in a concrete complex by the seafront. There are no green areas to chill out in - as opposed to the ones just mentioned, it isn't exactly a beautiful site and there isn't anywhere to get away from things. It really is aimed at music lovers. Not very child-friendly, really.

Could be OK I guess if you combined it with a holiday in Barcelona - then in the evening went along to the festival caught a few acts and went back to hotel at midnight/2am. But they may get very knackered! (trick is to sleep every day till lunchtime/early afternoon)

Christ, that's shit. Stay positive Pevenseagull, my mum, who is 79 was diagnosed with this last year. She is now entirely clear, after keyhole surgery got rid of it.

Positive vibes heading your way.

F-cking hell. Bunch of twats.

I had a bit of a scare in that area last year, but it came to nothing. Fingers crossed for the same outcome.

Really sorry to hear this Pevensea- I know of several people all who have made a full recovery but it is still a tremendous shock. All the best and thinking of you.

BRMC last night, sound mix was frankly shite (too loud, no bass control, shame on you Metro Freo, shame on you) but they were still pretty good. A heavily Howl loaded set just shot of 2 hours culminating in a breathtaking encore through an ultra sensitive low volume microphone for Complicated Situation and Shuffle Your Feet - see photo BRMC Howl acoustic duet 13.11.13.jpg

Seen them thrice, first couple of times they were excellent, the last time however they were shocking (The Old Market). A few years later I was listening to a phone in on Radio 6 involving worst gigs and 3 people nominated said gig as the most disappointing they'd ever been to, so it wasn't just me.
'
Anyhows, after the gig I retired to The Juggler for a beer, normally it would have been The Conqueror but I'd had an argument with my companion about how shit the gig was (they thought it was merely poor, I thought it was ****ing atrocious). I was sat at the bar regaling the barmaid as to how unbelievably crap it had been when a stranger next to me offered to buy me a drink. Dear reader, 'twas the drummer, he concurred that it was one of the shittiest gigs ever, apologised profusely and explained that the other band members were cockwombles (or words to that effect) . Nice fella.

I'd go and see them again

Just to echo the sentiments of others . Hang in there and have faith in the NHS. My Dad contracted it at the of age of 80 and survived it after keyhole surgeory .

Saw American Head Charge at the Haunt last night . Went there on the recomendation of a younger colleague at work. Should have listened to my instincts. I was at least 30 yaers older than the average age of the audience, who seemed to love it . Me , I found them a little bit lightweight and little Nu Metal.

Still roll on Sunday at The Haunt for the much rearranged gig by The Meteors. Have not seen them since a gig at The Old Vic in Ship Street. That pub has has more name changes than Blackburn have had managers .

Really looking forward to this one.
