Vampire Weekend - OK, they're slightly cheesy, but they put on a decent show last night. A good time was had by all. Some terrible dancing was going on in the audience though - people were struggling with the changes in pace and a lot of songs that appeared to be danceable but were actually a little bit deceptive.

Enough about your dancing...did the kids enjoy their first live gig?

I don't think they are cheesy, I thought the 2nd album was a bit of a wrong turn but the 1st & particuarly this years third album are intelligent, accessible indie.

Hope the kids enjoyed it.

Seen them thrice, first couple of times they were excellent, the last time however they were shocking (The Old Market). A few years later I was listening to a phone in on Radio 6 involving worst gigs and 3 people nominated said gig as the most disappointing they'd ever been to, so it wasn't just me.
'
Anyhows, after the gig I retired to The Juggler for a beer, normally it would have been The Conqueror but I'd had an argument with my companion about how shit the gig was (they thought it was merely poor, I thought it was ****ing atrocious). I was sat at the bar regaling the barmaid as to how unbelievably crap it had been when a stranger next to me offered to buy me a drink. Dear reader, 'twas the drummer, he concurred that it was one of the shittiest gigs ever, apologised profusely and explained that the other band members were cockwombles (or words to that effect) . Nice fella.

I'd go and see them again

First of all, really sorry to hear about your health P.

I've only seen BRMC once & they were superb, with a Brian Jonestown Massacre support at the Concorde, when Howl came out. It was in August I think and the main room was like a furnace.

In hindsight, I think it was the best time to see them. Their post Howl stuff never really did it for me. Howl was a really underrated album IMHO

Oh and Holter was absolutely outstanding - what say you Corgi? I thought the seating rather than standing really suited it, the crowd were very respectful (even of the dull as dishwater opener), the band were superb, tight when they needed to be, loose and laid back when it warranted. Julia herself was excellent, vocally close to perfect, her laid back, playful nature had the crowd eating from the palm of her hand.

One of the better gigs I've seen this year.

Haha - you saw through my thinly-veiled allusions to myself!

You're right - it's the indie snob in me: this forum normally discusses more leftfield music and so I suppose I was getting my defence in early - needlessly. I have all three albums, but I like the first one best. They ended with Walcott, which was the highlight for me. As for my kids, well, they absolutely loved it. The youngest one needed earplugs - he has sensitive ears. The other two were dancing around like crazed pre-teens, playing all manner of air guitar, air keyboard and drums and singing along to whatever they knew. You know you're getting old when your kids tell you what the name of the song is after the first chord. Three tired boys at school today, but no doubt showing off to their less fortunate Olly-Murs-loving classmates about what they did last night.

There's a lot of Holter on this thread - is she the one who sounds like Grouper with the occasional dash of Dead Can Dance, or am I thinking of someone else (maybe I am - it's someone Albumen likes)? I'll have to sort this out when I get home on spotify.

You are thinking Julianna Barwick. Let me introduce you to the lovely, talented Julia Holter

Interesting, there's two sides to every story however as I heard they kicked him out due his junkie unreliability before the last album. Sorry to hear of you medical news mate.

I saw Woodkid at the Brixton Academy last night with Wozza and our other halves. He was playing with the BBC orchestra and visually and aurally it was nothing less than stunning. The first half was quiet(ish) his voice being so distinctive that it tends to make some of the tracks sound samey but then he ramped it up and the crowd went mental. My goodness, it was a great gig.

Pevenseagull - really sorry to hear that you're not well, matey.

Thanks. I'll watch Holter later. I like Barwick - like a haunted forest at night. I need Hospitality to tour.

It's crept up on me that Barwick album, it takes a few listens but once you get the melodies in the head it's pretty addictive. I think it was albumen who said it reminds him of Sigur Ros's reflective moments, same here.

On the subject of Sigur Ros - is anyone seeing them at the Centre next week? I think I'm going to break my self enforced ban.

Agree with all of this. We arrived just before the support and manged to be fairly close to the front- did enjoy the cabaret seating style and some decent bottled beer available. Support was pretty good and went down well with the crowd- loved all her electronic tweaking if that's the correct term. Julia Holter and band were exceptional and tracks from the last album sounded even better live. Incidentally I got talking briefly to a Port Vale fan who was wearing a Vale Bobble Hat- think he was still celebrating their televised FA cup win from the night before.
