Don't know the facts but would surmise that they extended the contract so that they can retain his registration which is the thing that prevents him signing for another club in this country.

Having said that, the only ones that are likely to benefit from this are lawyers. If R & D gave him £30k cash then one can only presume it didn't go entirely through the books. Will raise issues about tax evasion for both parties.
