Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Bertin keeps Albion waiting
By Andy Naylor

Albion are still in the dark over the future of Alexis Bertin.

The Seagulls have not had an answer from the French midfielder to the offer of a new contract and they are not expecting him to report back with the rest of the squad for pre-season training on Monday.

Bertin impressed last season after Albion signed him on a short-term deal from Le Havre in January.

He was offered a two-year contract weeks ago but has attracted interested from other clubs both at home and abroad.

Meanwhile, manager Dean Wilkins is urging supporters to be realistic about Albion's chances of luring Darren Currie back to Withdean.

The Argus revealed on Wednesday that Currie has been made an offer to return but the 32-year-old midfielder is likely to move elsewhere.

Wilkins said: "There is competition from other clubs and we are competing with Championship clubs as well, so, as ambitious as we are trying to be, it is very competitive out there for us.

"When Andrew Whing signed he had a number of clubs in our League chasing him but, to his and his agent's credit, they both felt this was the right club for him.

"We are trying to gain ourselves a reputation as being a good club to play for, because it is difficult for us to compete financially at times.

"If we create a good environment where players enjoy their football then we are hoping word will get around and it becomes a big draw for players."

Basically, he is a reader of a comic strip, called Striker, and contributed a premiership diary. anyhow, heard from one of the other fans of that comic, that he has had some scottish, league one, and league two clubs after him - including us

Sounds like no deal.To be honest he can bugger off instead of keeping our club in the dark.Wilkins will find a replacement no doubt

Funnily enough that was exactly the same thing that Iwelumo did. He wanted to come back to us a year later.

You can't blame the guy though. He attracted a fair bit of interest from clubs far bigger than us, and we didn't exactly go out of our way to sign him up on a longer contract when prehaps we should have during the end of last season.

Maybe, but right now he obviously hasn't got the offer he wanted as he hasn't signed for anyone else. But, he's keeping us hanging on in case he doesn't get that offer. It's gone on a bit too long now, so why should we be grateful if, come the middle of July, he decides we're the best he can do.

Doesn't sound commited does he? Seems to think he is better then he is.I don't know why people seem to think he is class. His shooting was some of the worse i've seen.

I thought Bertin was a revelation in midfield when he first played...........but as the season wore on, I just got more and more disappointed with him. I thought the last game in particular, he didn,t seem to be trying that much. Undoubtedly a quality player, but a huge question mark about his mental attitude. Also, seems a good defensive midfielder in the "diamond" formation, (which I hate) but nothing exceptional regarding creative play.........IMHO.
