I have experienced racism against me, but you know what, I just thought those people were idiots and got on with my life.

Good for you but wouldn't you agree that the solution should be to attempt to get rid of the problem instead of ignoring it?

I don't care what they sung/said. A 3 year holiday from football is a joke and if we're not careful this insistence by some of our fans to have people hung drawn and quartered is going to come back and bite us in the arse.

What is to stop Palace or Gillingham fans getting the hump with us for calling them Pikeys? That is an offence after all http://metro.co.uk/2007/12/13/pikey-is-now-a-race-hate-word-583752/

It's not just a 3 year absence from football either, the restrictions that come with an FBO are nothing short of a nightmare. To call it draconian would be a massive understatement.

What do our fans have to do with this? Get again you miss the point entirely.

Because it's our fans or at least a vocal section of our fans that are pissing their pants over trivial bullshit like this.

All it's going to achieve is making us targets.

I'm really not the one missing the point am I!

I await your retort from one of your multiple accounts!

I'm a bit confused,I read on here that some fans hate the abuse and some see it as banter.I run the away stand and myself and my stewards do the best we can to stamp on homophobic chanting.sometimes it's not easy as there could be a big group chanting with no ringleader for us to make an example of.could someone please clarify what is accepted as banter and what's not.I've lost count of the injuries me and my staff have suffered over the years in trying to deal with this issue,

Nothing really difficult here,... if it is racist or openly obcene and completely inappropriate given the audience that may have to listen to it, then stamp it out,... anything that falls outside that can be fallen back on as 'banter' in the way it always has been.

Post some chants here with the key words that you hear - anything starred out by NSC is abusive and anything not, is acceptable ?

If there is a big group chanting the whole lot should be targeted for ejection or if a police presence is there , hauled out and arrested. Chants and remarks that are clearly overheard should be acted on with zero tolerance , we're talking about sex acts , gay paedophilia , dying from AIDS/HIV and not the mild banter that away fans think is original but we find so repetitive.

If they were the fans standing outside the southstand after the game then good, there were around 40/50 Derby fans shouting abuse two to three yards away from home fans walking up to the car park. Police seemed to be standing there doing nothing, clearly not.

What was being shouted by the group was a little more than we can see you holding hands etc. more you ****ing poofs go **** each other and die. quite clearly heard that, me and my friends walked on but I did think this was a little over the top, we walked off slagging off Derby talking about what a shithole it is and I'd much rather live in a town with a large gay community than live in Derby.

Surely what individuals on here think is totally irrelevant? Stewards and the Police should act in accordance with the law and ground/league regulations and that's that...

This thread further emphasises that the word "banter" is horrendous.

Loosely translated it means "Shit humour".

"Oh, it's only a bit of BANTAAA MATE"

Those regulations just use words like abusive, racist and homophobic language and suggest "if they are likely to cause offense" then the rules have been broken - they don't actually list the phrases or words. What I might find offensive could be worlds apart from what you find offensive although I'm sure we could agree on some things.

Only ever had one account sir. This case was brought by the police after they saw 2 Derby fans shouting obscenities at fans leaving the ground. They were not in the stadium and our fans had nothing to do with it. Why not just get the facts before you give an opinion based on the guesses of others?

Incredible people still defend it/shrug it off. Nobody's saying you can't have a laugh and a joke but do we really have to put up with hearing this shit from away fans every week? I guess it was the same back in 70's with racism, hopefully attitudes will change the same way here.

It's an interesting one that. I think straight blokes (and girls while we are at it) can still find it offensive because in a liberal society one can be upset by homophobia whether straight or gay. But my feeling simply on my reaction when seeing it is dependent on who it is. The Palace fans reaction when they beat us 3-1 at the Amex first season was awful in my view. They just seemed to be in some kind of timewarp. Some of the other fans though have just enjoyed the banter. Maybe that sort of banter isn't really acceptable and I certainly think the FA can do much more to tackle the issue in the game given the effort theyve made on racism, but I have a couple of gay friends who think i'm being a bit precious about it. I kind of agree. I think like racism, we should be dealing with it on a club culture level, not the fan issue. My two gay friends love the responses we give when abused and think that does more to ridicule it than anything.

Could not agree more with that last sentence.

There are however many instances of pure bile which so far transgress any interpretation as "banter" that some other action is required if we are to maintain the pretence of being an equal and inclusive society.

I am not convinced by FBO's per se but nor do I think that anti-social behaviour should be condoned at a football match any more than anywhere else. Many will have observed the millwall fan on Saturday refusing twice to return the ball and a using the stewards. His son aged about 4 or 5 was gleefully jumping up and down and clearly enjoying learning from his father how to conduct himself while the mother, baby in arms, sat behind swearing/screaming abuse. That type of behaviour frankly saddens me although reading some people's comments on here I will doubtless be labelled soft and overly liberal as a result. I wouldnt arrest the guy though (although I might have refused entry to the group who barged past Albion fans on the way in chanting about being "c@#*s and hard *******s and proud to be hated"

No reason of course that all Brighton fans should be opposed to what others view as anti-social behaviour any more than all Derby or Millwall or Palace fans should be labelled by the actions of a relative few.

Where have I said I know what happened? All I know is 2 young lads can't go football for 3 years because of something they said. You seem to be the all knowing one. What did they say? Did anyone complain? Was anyone offended?

I don't care what it was they said, it could have been the most offensive thing in the world ever! The punishment does not fit the crime! I appreciate they are being made an example of but that isn't allot of comfort for them who now at least 2 years (you can appeal a banning order after 2/3 of it) of not being allowed anywhere near a regulated game of football. You sit on your arse all day doing **** all because you are "sick" (but well enough to go to football), perhaps you can give them some tips on how to fill their Saturdays now?

The likes of Costa and her croanies and the Sussex old bill are ruining it for those of us who don't feel the need to offended on someone else's behalf. All that will happen is other forces will join in and start banning people for trivial bullshit.

I don't think they are dumb, quite the opposite they are very calculating, plenty of examples of when they have not pursued cases for politically sensitive reasons..........

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/05/jeremy-hunt-cps-not-prosecute-abortion-doctors

Much better to bring the absolute full force of the law and all the costs involved on these 2 as oppose to say fixed penalties.

This... but they normally will only act when another offence is committed.

"You're a poofter" is homophobic abuse but "I'm going to punch you, you poofter" is aggravated assault and this is what gets you arrested and banned, but the "poofter" is what gets reported!

Yes, I would agree with you but these things can get taken too far and imo, you cannot take offence every time some says anything even mildly inflammatory or critical which is where it has got for me. Society is heading towards sterility.

The difference is quite straightforward. The Equalities Act 2010 defines "protected characteristics" where the law will take action in relation to discrimination, harassment and victimisation. These are:- Age, Disability, Gender Reassignment, Marriage & Civil Partnerships, Pregnancy & Maternity, Race, Religion or Belief, Sex and Sexual Orientation.

Living in the North of England is not a protected characteristic.

So would someone be arrested for singing 'You're old, and you've forgotten you are' if we played Eastbourne Borough in Sussex Senior Cup ?
